I’ve apparently done similar before as a kid. My Mum was taking me and my cousin somewhere on the bus and on the bus there was a poster of a group of monkeys so me and my cousin started laughing saying “look Mum, monkeys” and then started doing monkey noises, problem was there was a black guy right by the poster... naturally me and my cousin were oblivious but my Mum said she wanted the ground to swallow her up that day

.
My daughter, now 25, was at some fancy prep school when she was a toddler. Not many black people in York, truth be told, but my daughter's best friend was a black kid, the daughter of a barrister. I bought my daughter a comic on the way home from school after picking her up. As usual, as soon as we got in she sat on my lap with her comic and demanded a read.
In the story, the main character was a black girl. My daughter immediately pointed to her and said 'She's like Betty'. I have no idea why I did what came next: I stuttered and said 'Er, er, yes, she has shoes like Betty'. 'No, she has the same colour face as Betty?'. 'I, er, don't think we should say that, Lucy'. 'Dad, is there something wrong with brown skin?'. 'No, no, no, that's not what I mean. You, just, er,,,, let's not talk about it".
Complete parental **** up. To my daughter, black/brown skin was just a distinguishing feature like red hair or being tall. The way it should be. She has plenty of black and Asian friends now, especially since uni. The only prejudice she seems to have is with Man U fans, which is awkward as her feller and her half-sister are ones.
