I ****ing loathe the current misuse of that word tbh.

The origins of the word, make its use as a derogatory term (as it’s become for many it seems) even worse.

It seems that if you show empathy, compassion or understanding then you’re somehow ‘woke’, well count me the **** in.

It’s become the new ‘it’s PC gone mad!’ and whilst I’d agree that there’s some out there who are way too eager to take offence at literally anything (usually on someone else’s behalf like) that term needs lobbing in the ****ing bin in the context it’s being used by many in current discourse.

It’s certainly changed it’s meaning then if that’s what it’s supposed to mean. I certainly wouldn’t consider somebody who cares about racism and sees it as a problem as ‘woke’. The term ‘woke’ to me is associated with people who are on a crusade to change history and deny any fact or evidence that doesn’t comply with their opinion.

to be fair it's like the definition of racism has changed (well at least i think it has).

Racism used to be discriminating against people because they physically looked different by colour. It didn't matter if you were white, brown, yellow or black etc.

Now the definition of racism is the same but only if the discrimination is at the minority. You can't be racist against the majority race ruling race, it's only classed as discrimination.

Maybe it’s just me but there’s a certain level of ‘racist humour’ I find funny no matter what colour you are, including my own. I enjoy laughing at myself, at my cultural habits etc and I also do the same with every other culture. There’s no hate...in my experience when I’ve done it with my mates of various backgrounds...we laugh over it and it’s a great bonding experience because deep down we know, it’s just all love.

I guess you have to factor in wether you know the person or not...can easily be taken as straight up hatred if you don’t know the person.

yeah, i love a bit of racist banter. However, there's a fine line here, as you say, some of your mates might not take it so well or some of your mates might be thick as **** and say it to people they aren't familiar with (well i guess they don't know until they've insulted someone).

Need to be real careful though, i was lucky i was close enough to a black colleague when i called him a monkey one day (i had a habit of calling everyone a monkey as in dumb as a monkey could do your job) and you could cut the tension with a knife. Luckily i'm chinese and we were good enough mates (not one i made racist banter with though) else that could have ended up pretty bad!.

Yeah, there's a level of self deprecating humour that goes a long way to show an understanding of cultural identities. And showing that you're at ease with it all too. Programmes like In Sickness and in Health sent up the bigoted old white man. And programmes like Desmonds poked fun at the old first generation Windrush folk.

It's healthy to include humour, as long as it's done in the right spirit. But I guess it's a thin line.

All these terms are new to me, woke and gammon, I knew what gammon meant (eventually), as it's quite self explanatory in memes, but I didn't and still don't really know what woke means. Think I've got some idea from Tel and Tobes discussion.

I hate all this left v right stuff and all the point scoring that goes with it. It just devalues opinion, then all that happens is discussions don't get had. I think it's because debates become weaponised.

Can honestly say that the woke and gammon term/language has never entered into any discussions I've had away from the internet.
