I always separate what a person contributes to the club on the pitch to their private lives and views and actions but I guess that Matt has put himself in the spotlight for publicising them on social media. The good that he has brought to the club far outweighs any adverse publicity but I would understand if the club decided to stop him being an ambassador.
We might have had some total ****s that have played for the club in the past but still maintain legend status, I know that Terry Paine was a Tory councellor in the city for a while!..

I have a signed A0 photo of Matty scoring that fairy tale goal against Arsenal framed and hanging in my dining room. That’s my memory of him, and unless he does something which actually makes a positive difference to people’s lives in the same way as his mate Franny, I can easily ignore the stuff he says or does outside of football. Thankfully most people are sensible and don’t take conspiracy theories seriously, especially those passed on by a former footballer
It’s simple really, there are many many many ****ing idiots in the world. Social media has given slightly smarter idiots a tool to spout there idiocy and reach millions of people with it, hooking the first group of idiots in.
There are people who’s actual job is to make up fake stories and suck this group of impressionable idiots in using fancy words like “Illuminati” and “enlightened”. These fake story spreaders aren’t idiots, they are actually very good at what they do, but then as their story spreads and changes through word of mouth millions end up believing it and you end up with the scenario we have now.
The Rabbithole effect plays a very big part in these theories gaining traction. Select a video/post to view online that's categorised in a certain fashion by that platform's algorithms and you just get fed more. To the end user it can quickly dominate their world views. If you haven't seen it, The Social Dilemma on Netflix will terrify you.

Yep. Algorithms plus the sense of belonging and frankly superiority from belonging to the community that Knows The Truths They Don't Want You to Know. And once you have dipped a toe in, it's difficult to pull back...that means admitting you were taken in by a fraud, and few people have the fortitude to admit that. So they double down instead and get deeper and deeper.

It’s already been stated by others in clear terms, but yes, this is not an issue of freedom of speech. This is a person who is a club ambassador. He has a contract with the club and is a representative of the club in an official capacity. If he’s being a twat in public it makes the club look bad and they should justifiably distance themselves from him. Similarly I wouldn’t expect the club to employ David Icke as a representative or another polarising figure because it’s not good for their brand. He can freely be a twat in public on his own time and yes, there’s very little to be done about it at that point apart from ask him to shut up because nobody likes what he’s saying. Even then, if Twitter and Facebook were to ban him that’s not a free speech issue either. They are corporate owned platforms and if they chose they can decide that they don’t want lunacy on there because it makes them look bad. This is well-trodden territory from the Former POTUS getting banned for being a twat. At that time there were plenty of conservative voices yelling about free speech and being deplatformed. Sorry, but you used your freedom and these are the consequences of delivering your bullshit in the open market you love so much where the platform holders and anyone who may be listening can decide “**** you. We don’t want this.” Go start a podcast.
On the harm caused by this conspiracy idiocy, please, I am telling you of the dangerous nature of these ideas. Many smarter people than me have written about this kind of radicalisation. In Kuwait part of our prevent duty looks to identify religious radicalisation, that’s the same in the U.K. too. About six months ago I added a section to address conspiracy radicalisation after one of the secondary kids made a disclosure about Q and some frightening “ideas” which included anti-Vax alongside them.
Getting someone aboard that train is dangerous. Full stop. These ideas share the same spaces, especially online and in the vein of “If you’ll believe that, you’ll believe anything” people do. You just have to look at the US Capitol riots for perfect examples. Lots of Right wing, racists who believe DT was the second coming and oh yeah masks and COVID are bullshit and Democrats are child molesters trafficking children to harvest their adrenal glands. I regularly look at the conspiracy pages on Reddit and similar online spaces because I have a family member who went off the deep end many years ago. The Venn diagram of 9-11/Pizzagate/COVID-19 truthers/flat earth/incels/QAnon/5G makes the frogs gay is not a perfect circle, but it’s pretty ****ing close once people breathe enough of that air.
I sort of bounced around this in my post just now about how getting started on any of this is dangerous but this is really it.

It’s not a job though. The ‘ambassadors’ just basically put in some of their free time to help out with some of the Saints-sponsored charities.
Matt has visited the special needs school I used to work at a few times. Colleagues always said he is a lovely bloke and very helpful and always has time for the students.
It’s a bit of a stretch to equate his Twitter account to that of an American president.
Where do you stand on gambling? If Matt posted that he bet £50 on a football game, should that be frowned upon, considering the harm that gambling has on certain people?
Also, David Icke seems like a very nice guy too. Can’t see why it would be a problem having him as ambassador (in theory).
Off topic a bit....why do flat-earthers think people are lying to them about the Earth being round. What possible advantage is gained by convincing people the Earth is round if it is not? Always puzzled me.

You’re focused on the wrong part of my issue with this and I can’t really tell you what it is any further. I have an intense dislike for the ideas and culture of those theories and by proxy, people he’s endorsing. Anyone paying attention can see the danger and lunacy of what he’s saying and he should not be representing the club in an official role at this moment.
He can be nice to some people. That’s wonderful. You can be nice to some people and animals, a great player for Southampton and still be an absolute ****ing thick **** spouting a load of absolute bloody horseshit.
Both those things can be true.
