With the benefit of hindsight you probably could have? My Art teacher said the same to me but at the time I tried my best.

Total lemmings. And you can bet these idiots, crowded together cheek by jowl, will be the first to criticize the government for the level of infections and deaths

Give it a go. They’ll have still done an objectively appalling job this time tomorrow too I’m guessing.

Absolutely staggering. If I were the medic, I would have simply shown them the door and said if you don't believe it exists, then don't call NHS for treatment of any symptoms. Next call would be to the funeral directors as the patient is clearly, elderly and sick but can't himself see that.

Pascal Soriot, French CEO of Anglo - Swedish AZ giving some really bizarre excuses for their failure to be able to deliver on their promises to the EU.

The EU signed the contract ‘too late’ for AZ to iron out production issues in time. If AZ knew this and knew that they would fail to deliver the volume agreed why did they sign the contract? Was there no learning from the UK experience re production issues?

UK government gets praised for signing early, and presumably for approving early as well, and it’s certainly contributed to our excellent vaccination rate. What gets mentioned less is that the UK pays more per dose than the EU, and has granted the vaccines manufacturers indemnity from liability, which the EU hasn’t. Perhaps the manufacturers are simply prioritising the return on investment/margin.
    Pfizer jab - £15 UK, £10.60 EU
AZ jab £3 UK, £1.59 EU........and despite ‘affordability’ promises £3.84 in South Africa. I work in this industry and sometimes it stinks.

I thought that AZ were doing it at cost price for 3 years? Maybe costs are higher in UK than EU like wages, premises costs etc. Good job it's not being produced in Ireland as you wouldn't get mush change out of €5 per dose.........

Yeah, I thought it was a condition from the Oxford academics that the vaccine would be sold at cost while the pandemic was still officially ongoing. It has nothing to do with different production costs in different countries, pharmaceutical pricing doesn’t work like that. In fact a hell of a lot of medicines are made in and exported from Ireland, many huge multinationals have plants around Cork/Kinsale, because of historic tax breaks I think - when these medicines reach their final destination they will be sold at different prices. Soriot is denying that the price differences have anything to do with which countries are getting the vaccine, so it must just be a coincidence..........naive, moi?

Happy to stand corrected, but hasn't vaccine indemnity (for manufacturers) been part of UK law for ages?

Well, as far as l’m concerned, they can stick that practice right up their ass, l ain’t getting tested!

It’s a bit confusing. I thought the indemnity scheme was for the NHS and professionals giving the jab. And even if not, does indemnity cover what are still unlicensed, emergency use only medicines?

I can’t vouch for the accuracy of this source.....

Helpful link, thanks. It was the Fund the article refers to that I was thinking of. Didn't appreciate that the payout was so small, or the subtle introduction of immunity.

We have had this discussion umpteen times before Kiwi.

This is our government way of reporting ( their choice).

The death rate would be much higher if we added in people who died after 28 days from the effects of Covid.. from long term ventilation, heart problems caused by covid..or as in cases recently reported of people getting over Covid, returing home and then having a serious relapse.

Different estimates have our death rate due to Covid closer to 120,000.... Plus several thousands more due to people not seeking help for unrelated conditions.

We should record our deaths like Germany and we would probably have 50k? Whatever it ends up being it’s still too high.

    And your point is

    Europe

How do different countries calculate their COVID-19 death rates?

COVID-19 death rates can spike many weeks or months after the virus has apparently retreated, as seen in Wuhan, China. Due to updated reporting it raised its official Covid-19 death toll by 50 percent, adding 1,290 fatalities,

Comparing and compiling data around death rates can be difficult as countries use a variety of methods to record it. Some record solely deaths of those who have been tested and that occurred in hospital while other nations include those who have died in care homes and/or the deaths of all those, in any settings, who are suspected of having COVID-19.

READ MORE: Meet the 99 year-old who raised $22 million to fight COVID-19

In an attempt to quantify the rate at which care home residents are dying from the virus, the London School for Economics (LSE) has conducted a study that suggests around 50 percent of deaths are of the elderly in care homes.

If their findings - based on data from France, Belgium and Spain among others - are extrapolated to all countries affected by the pandemic then it suggests that the death rate is significantly higher than in countries which don't include care home deaths in their death rates.

How do different countries record their death rates?

    Germany

The nation's 16 federal states are currently reporting deaths inside and outside hospitals as a single number, to the country's public health body, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). Gender, age and underlying medical conditions are also provided to RKI. Work on a breakdown between hospital and non-hospital deaths is underway but this information is not yet available.

At 2.7 percent Germany has a low death rate when compared to other European nations, although the rate has been climbing in recent weeks. Health officials have noted the spread of COVID-19 in care homes which could help explain the rising mortality rate. In Germany, 87 percent of all deaths, but only 18 percent of all cases, occur in those over 70-years-old.

Germany's case numbers include those who died "of" COVID-19, and those who died "with" the disease, in accordance with the Infection Protection Act. Or as RKI head Lothar Wieler puts it, "a corona death is someone who was proven to have a coronavirus infection." Which is not the same as actually dying from it. Making Germany's relatively low figures all the more impressive.
