With respect Tobes, that's bollocks. The rule makes no mention of 'control' at all, just a deliberate intent to play the ball. So yes (see Milner example) if it 'bounces off' a defender unwittingly, it's still offside. If the defender attempts at all to play it (as Lovren comically did), then it's onside. I personally think that penalises the defending player for playing to the whistle.

The way our players pause and signal to their defenders where we're going to pass I think is really considerate.
