It was never rushed through, I felt that narrative was political from the very start. Not even from the Commons, but especially here on the continent, the UK was bashed for "pushing through a dangerous vaccine that our superior European minds would never do in a million years." of course a week later most European countries began ordering vaccines, but that's neither here nor there.

There is a smug, know it all, environment here right now with both Corona and Brexit hitting at once and its helping fuel these antivax narratives.

I never heard anything about Europeans tbh. I'm just going by what folk have been saying in the UK. There are enough nutjobs here tbf although I understood the legitimate concerns around safety.

Irony for me is I'm actually surprised it's taken 5/6 weeks when the Pfizer one seemed to be approved much quicker.

What's concerning atm is the impact of rising infections (of the new strain) on our hospitals.

It really seems like they're approaching breaking point. Everyone needs to think carefully about doing anything that could put themselves and others at risk.

Not really sure why everyone needs to be vaccinated?

When it's patently obvious that the vast majority of people are unaffected by this anyway. Which has always been the case.

Vaccinate shielders, NHS workers, the elderly and front line teachers etc. There should be enough to go round if they target those who actually need it.

The need to vaccinate the most vulnerable is a given.

The reason why you'd be aiming to vaccinate as many as possible is not necessarily the impact on those we consider unaffected but those around them or who they come into contact with. Especially if we want the country and the world as a whole to get back to as close to what was normal.

Btw hospital doctors are reporting that they are being overwhelmed by people in their 20's and 30's (by the new variant) who were previously considered as lower risk. So it has an impact on the NHS also.

Trouble with the AstraZeneca vaccine is that in the trials it was only 60% effective .

I saw on the news this morning, it's now showing 90% following the approval. It was a ticker-tape rolling across the screen so I haven't read any more on it though.

I stopped listening to the whining talking heads tripped out by the BBC (other news outlets are available) to give the worst case scenario every day.

It's now just background noise, like is was during the first wave.

Hospitals in Britain are nearly full during winter, shock. Like most years then.

The only fact I'm interested in is that the vast majority of us don't need it, never will, and so there is clearly enough to roll it out to those that do. In the first instance.

I don't see many whining, but I do find the repetitiveness of the same news over and over every 15 mins more annoying.

I believe the majority do need it for the reasons I said previously and I agree we should prioritise.

Btw I never said there wasn't enough, just that it would take time. We shouldn't expect it all to be completed so soon that's all.

I reckon we were thinking of doing it in a controlled environment but if thats how you wanna roll it out like.

nope its 90% when given full dose and later a half dose however that was on a small sample in the trial phase and very few were over 55's . More research is needed to check if dosing like that does really increase the efficacy of the vaccine and if still effective in over 55's .

The controlled environment could be pubs. Tim Spoon-faced-**** is sure to volunteer his hostelries, for the right price. Free pint and a scotch egg with every shot.

Big government contract coming Spoons way now, I reckon.

Doesn’t help when a plethora of right wing journalists, mostly the ones who declared the pandemic ‘over’ months ago, are now for some reason tweeting old photos of random empty hospital wards as some sort of evidence it’s all a huge scam.

tbh the whole vaccine thing is a bit weird as they don't know for certain if it stops you getting the virus or if it just stops the effects being noticeable and if the latter if you could be infectious .

Seriously? I just took that for granted! Surely part of what vaccines do is prevent you getting it and becoming infectious.
