Also coached Argentina just like Maradona.
When Sabella joined the blunts they really wanted Maradona, but got knocked back.

paulo rossi, 64, italian footballer whose goal scoring was a major factor in italy's 1982 world cup winning.

italy drew all three group games, as did cameroon, but italy had scored twice and cameroon only once, so italy went through.

in an typical piece of fifa stupidity, the final games of each group were played on different days, and the final match of one group was between austria and west germany. it ended 1-0 allowing both teams through. apart from the goal, neither team crossed the halfway line. effing german ****s, effing austrian ****s. this game became knowm as the disgrace of dijon (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disgrace_of_Gijón). fifa compounded their brainless mishandling of the tournament with the second round consisting of four three-team groups, so the final match inevitably invited repeats of the austria-west germany farce. fifa don't learn though.

italy, meanwhile, made their way to the final, having beaten brazil 3-2 in the second group, with rossi scoring a hattrick.

in the semis, west germany beat france to get to the final, despite an outrageous assault by the german keeper on one of the french strikers. it was blatantly a red card, but the referee chickened out. rossi scored twice as italy beat poland 2-0.

italy beat the double-effing ****s 3-1 in the final to restore a semblance of karma. rossi scored one of the goals.

Funny how I can recall Rossi and what he did 38 years ago more clearly than the events of the World Cup 2 years ago.

    I know what you mean.
I remember clear as a bell where I was when Italy beat Brazil 3-2 in the *semifinals.
On a school trip to Beamish.
Couldn't wait to get home to find out the score and watch the highlights.

    *edit - final group match

Italy beat Poland 2-0 at the Nou Camp in the semi final. Not sure who scored but seem to recall Bruno Conti got one. But could be wrong.
The other semi was the infamous France-W.Germany game when Shoemaker nearly killed Battiston.

The WC was so exciting then because you never saw or had even heard of most of the players.

Great world cup teams - both 0f 'em...watched in no-man's land between the Italian & Portuguese districts in a Toronto sports bar. It was electric and believe it or not no trouble. Either way, the celebrations after the match were going to be crazy (with joy, not violence). Up there with one of the best nights of football ever for me.

Despite all the negativity about catenaccio, the Italians had some superb attacking technique over the years.

She is another one of the classic Brit commedians (and somewhat unsophisticated actors) who gave pleasure to millions for so long in tough times, and beyond. Always admired her enthusiasm.
    RIP Barbara.

Played with a mate of mine at LUFC. He told me he was a very clever player - but not pacey.
They were good mates. Bloody 'ell, I know someone (he lives here in Canada) who kicked the ball around with a world final cup coach - '0wzatt ?
RIP Alex. X also sends his condolances to his family & friends.
