Imagine picking up a career ending injury (not saying it is ) whilst training for an England friendly?Especially in times when the league fixtures are already chocker and the friendly needed to be Fooked Off.
If it's true that Gomez as suffered a broken leg then his injury isn't down to playing too much, it's a impact impact injury. Same with Thiago and VVD.
(Not saying you suggested they were)

Pickford is becoming too notoriousSouthgate mentioned that it happened while he was on his own....Unless Pickford decided to finish the job on our defence in training![]()
.I'm guessing that cancelling internationals would get them into lumber over sponsorship deals, TV payments etc?tbf to Southgate he doesn't seem impressed by this seasons ridiculous fixture list
Southgate: "I spoke about this right at the beginning of the season.
"With Joe [Gomez] a good example: we knew the load he has had in the last six weeks or so.
"We gave him and the other players who had been in European matches who played Sunday, an extra day's recovery. Yet still something like this has happened.
"There are lots of discussions about extra subs. But the bigger picture here is, everybody in the game needs to work together.
"There was an opportunity this year to think differently. The pandemic has thrown up all sorts of difficulties for people. But everybody has tried to cram the programme into a smaller period.
"We are going to see injuries. It's a desperately sad situation. When you see the impact on an individual, it hits home even more.
"A lot of these discussions should have happened in the summer. We could have adjusted the calendar in its entirety and all worked together. But people haven't done that."
yeah one assumes so .I'm guessing that cancelling internationals would get them into lumber over sponsorship deals, TV payments etc?
This isn't an excuse of course, but may be an explanation - in part at least. We know it's all about the money.
And the fans - in a different way, of course.Joe's injury could have easily happened with us as it did in the England set up. It wasn't a bad tackle or an impact injury.
However, it is incredibly stupid to jam pack pointless international friendlies into an already compressed season.
Have to feel sorry for the players - they are the ones who will suffer from this.
And the fans - in a different way, of course.
I think it's highly unlikely that we can retain our title the way things are going, unless the upcoming players are a complete revelation.
Yeah, I'm not being unduly negative - I never am - I just think it'll be difficult for this inexperienced defence we're going to have to field more often than we would like.Under normal circumstances, I would say we walk the league.
I do still think we are the best and we should still win the league but we do need to get luckier with these injuries now. Get Thiago, Trent and Fabinho back and now we have the fringe players like Naby and Shaq in the mix, the squad is beefing out a bit more. We still have a lot of quality.
