Seem to remember Ings being a final day name that appeared out of thin air.
Ah yes I remember all we knew was about a potential signing was on a plane on the way down ....with everyone guessing.
Was he? I can't remember, but I thought there were rumours that we were deciding between him or Welbeck (
) and it turned out to be Ings?
I think we had been linked but in papers but it all happened extremely quickly because it was deadline day. I just can't remember the last time Saints announced a signing and we didn't all know who it was long before the official announcement
I'd suggest that the closer you get to the final day, the greater the chances are of a name coming out of thin air.
Earlier in the window, that will generally only happen if things have been done discreetly behind the scenes. At the back end of the window, it will either be because of that, or because a late opportunity genuinely has sprung up. Maybe because of desperation by a club or a player. Maybe because a club has sorted out its incomings, and is now happy to let someone go. Maybe because another move goes through, which then causes a sudden chain reaction. Various reasons.

So have we TBF, it's just that we have squandered so much of the proceeds.
We've also sold our best players and replaced them badly. They've mostly made a lot of money selling players they don't use or need. Coutinho being the exception.
