They really don't want this to end in a draw then!

Luke Wells leaving Sussex - I reckon would be another good solid option for Hampshire to open next year. Not the most exciting of potential signings, but I'm sure would do a job in 4 day cricket for us.

Goes to the side who lead on first innings.

If it's level on first innings, or either first innings can't be completed (eg match is badly affected by rain), then the trophy gets shared if the match is drawn.

He's not scored runs for a little while, but if he could rediscover his old form then he'd make a great signing. An opener who can make red ball 100s and 200s? Yes please.

(And whilst he is heavily a red ball batter, if the one-day competition next year is again scheduled to clash with the 100, he would also become an option in 50 overs. Just look at how weak we were this season without Vince, Dawson and Rilee in the batting!)

At last a good session for Somerset. If, and it is a big if, Somerset can get over 350, this game could be exciting. As things stand, Essex still look favourites with their strong batting and potent bowling attack.

As things stand, there’s only one team in it. Somerset’s bowling attack has been by far the most potent in the BWT, and anything over 250 in the first innings will be a bonus. If we get 350 - 400, with Essex batting last, we will be strong favourites.

New ball removes both Overton and now Byrom, for an excellent 117.

A rare tail-end collapse from Somerset following the new ball.

301 ao. Could be enough, if the bowlers play up to their BWT form. Having a first-innings lead could be crucial, although the forecast is OK for the last 3 days.

Getting Sir Alastair out tonight would be a bonus.

    Edit: bad light saved them.

I would say the match is about evens, Just when you think you have them on the ropes, they strike back with Venom. Even if a side gets a considerable first innings lead, they are the one team that can dismiss their opponents in their second innings cheaply, thus giving themselves a getable target. When was the last time a team defeated Essex in red ball cricket? I am not an Essex supporters but they are good. Best of luck Somerset!

    Nicely balanced.

Come on Somerset, smash em please.

Can't have our bitter rivals over the water getting smug again.

    The only way is Somerset.

Somerset would have a 100% record in red ball cricket this season if it weren’t for a completely washed-out 4th day at Edgbaston that prevented us taking the last Warwickshire wicket. I know Essex are a formidable side, but given the choice between the two bowling attacks, I know which one I’d choose.

I have never thought of Essex as smug. More likely Surrey. As for Middlesex they are living in the past and at executive level a management structure deeply embedded with "who you know" rather than oñe based on ability.

Somerset may well get a first innings lead but we have seen Essex really apply the peressure in the second innings. The key yo this game is Somerset's second innings.

Cook looking like he could bat for another day, the man is sooo frustrating if you are rooting for the other team.

New ball will surely be key here. Essex looked to be cruising to the magical 302 at one point, then those three quick wickets pulled Somerset right back into it, but now this partnership has settled Essex back down again. But they're still just about far enough away from 302, that the new ball could yet see Somerset blow the doors off this match.
