The RNLI are appealing for extra help due to the pandemic , our family have supported this organisation over many years in a variety of ways . We stopped our support when we were made aware that the charity was sending money out of the country to purchase Burkas for Asian groups , this was not because we are racist but we regarded this as an abuse to the many people like ourselves who thought the money was going to support our lifeboats and the many volunteers who crew the rescue craft . Barnardos was another charity that we supported for many years until we received a letter of thanks for bringing Edinburgh to a standstill whilst a Conference/Summit was taking place a few years back , we felt that we were not prepared to be classed as activists and immediately withdrew our monthly contribution. You think you are supporting charities for the right reasons but how they actually spend the money is something different , we now support safer Charities we hope!

I don't trust many of these charities and some are downright annoying.

All of my 'charity money' goes to the Salvation Army which my family have been involved with for a hundred years.

No organisation is perfect but I feel I can trust them to use the money well.

I know they likely need to do it in order to compete in what is a crowded market, but I hate the idea of donating hard earned money to a charity that pays people at the top hundreds of thousands a year. I'd always much prefer to donate to a smaller organisation that really needs the money and has a smaller, but equally important, remit

We give to st Benedicts hospice who looked after my mother in law, I’ve also volunteered there cleaning and gardening and stuff. Boils my piss that these worthwhile organisations rely so heavily on charity to continue to do good and multi billion companies can avoid uk tax

Agreed. There's so many drives to get people to donate and things, which is fine, but it boils my piss when it's us, who are already taxed, paying for stuff that the government should be paying for with the money we give them. Like the old gadgy getting loads of donations for the NHS, it was class, but we shouldn't be having to fund it

As a crew member for the RNLI, and my own personal opinion, you’re money won’t be missed. less than 2% of money goes overseas, most of this is requested for project work, to save lives.

I can't agree with you mate.

Millions of pounds of our money was sent abroad which we thought was going to the RNLI, a 'Royal' institution of this country.

They don't have donors permission to throw money around like that, creches in Bangladesh ffs.

how do you know it was your money?
The RNLI gets massive donations with specific requests as to where it goes. 2% is buttons, the RNLI was chosen as it’s expertise in life saving is world leading.
The institute has been very clear for a few years now about life saving projects overseas, if people aren’t bright enough to read websites etc then surely that is there own problem.
For what it’s worth, we don’t beg for anything in our station, we are in the top 3 busiest in the country, if we need it, we get it.

Some of the biggest charities are far far worse than any tax avoiding corporate company.

From theft to rape to fraud. There's nothing I would put past them.

I wouldn't donate to charity unless it was a very small organisation where I could see exactly who my money helped.

You are completely missing the point, most of the money overseas has been requested by donors as that is where they wish for it to be spent.
They see our work here and want to replicate it using Rnli staffers.

If people want to donate to Bangladesh they don't immediately think of the RSPCA or RNLI.

Show me your proof and I'll happily apologise and donate £20.

We currently spend less than 2% of the RNLI’s total annual expenditure on our international drowning prevention activity and we actively seek donations specifically for this work, including the Isle of Man’s International Development Fund and Department for International Development in the UK, both of which have made substantial donations to our international work this year. Providing the very best search and rescue service in the UK and Ireland remains our priority but we are also proud to use our expertise, knowledge and influence to help others save lives across the world, particularly in countries where drowning rates are high.

The burkini, which is a full length swim suit is an innovative (and cheap) way of enabling girls in strict Muslim countries, to get into the water without compromising their cultural and religious beliefs.The RNLI have been involved in the Panje Project with the majority of the RNLI’s involvement funded by a donor who specifically wanted the money to go towards this project.
