    Oxford at home.

has fixture release day ever felt as pointless as today? It used to be quite an exciting day didn’t it? Did it? I can’t remember the old word any more.

Sunderland AFC will face Bristol Rovers at the Stadium of Light on the opening day of the 2020-21 Sky Bet League One season.

After opening their campaign with a Carabao Cup and EFL Cup double, the Lads will host the Pirates before travelling to Oxford United for their second third-tier outing on Saturday 19th September.

Phil Parkinson’s side will round off the first month of the campaign at home to Peterborough United, while an action-packed October will see them face Charlton Athletic (A), Blackpool (H), Swindon Town (A), Crewe Alexandra (H), Portsmouth (H), Rochdale (A) and Gillingham (A).

The Black Cats will conclude the campaign on home turf against newly promoted Northampton Town on Saturday 8th May, with their final away game taking place one week earlier at Plymouth Argyle’s Home Park.

A Boxing Day clash at the Stadium of Light against Hull City also awaits, with the Lads ushering in 2021 versus Northampton at Sixfields Stadium on Saturday 2nd January.

Oxford, Peterboro and Charlton will probably all be up there at the top of the table, this season. I’ve got a feeling that Swindon will do well, too.

It's a harder start for our opposition than it is for us there marrra. They won't be fancying playing Parky's Invincibles early doors.

I think some of the bigger teams such as Charlton, portsmouth may suffer this time round. Wigan will be strong. To be fair to them they finished mid table in a very hard league. However, I am more optimistic than I felt before last season.

The fact that we as supporters are not taking this season lightly is a good sign, you cant just turn up and expect three points as a given in this league or any other, the players need to be prepared for the challenge, a committed dressing room is vital, and some of our first team squad need to do their talking on the pitch. I like the first 5. Teams that you’d expect to be in and around us so be a good gauge for where we are early doors.

We should be beating Rovers first game to set us up for the next few which are tough, tight looking calls.

So we wait until Boxing Day for Honeyman's return, but we are hosting Jack Baldwin in the opener.
