Is complaining about racism stupid? I think you are missing the point wildly here.

Abraham Lincoln ending slavery has had a questionable end result? What?
"Yeah, I get it." Really? Care to help the rest of us out, then?

The Fail have gone in on Johnson on two fronts today, rather bizarrely.
Their first attack is about his intervention for pornographer Richard Desmond, following several meeting between the two.
Their second concerns his decision to scrap the Cabinet's pandemic team a little under a year ago.

Corruption and incompetence? I'm shocked. Shocked, I tell you.
Bodger hasn't been kissing enough of the right arses, either.
I think he may get replaced in a fairly short period, after he's ballsed up Brexit and they can pin it on him.

The thing is, John Cleese is talking a load of old bollocks, again.

The episode in question was temporarily taken down to apply an edit that he agreed to in 2013.
That allows it to be shown prior to the watershed and streamed with a lesser rating.
This obviously NSFW clip is what was removed for the younger audience:

Is it racist, in the context of the original episode? No.
The Major is the butt of this joke, as even Basil Fawlty finds him to be reprehensible.
Is it suitable for children? Probably not. The nuance would be lost on a lot of them and indeed a lot of adults, unfortunately.

It's a weird relationship between Johnson and the Tory right. By instinct I think he is way more liberal than them and so unacceptable

However he is more than anything else an opportunist who picked the right side (for his ambitions) in the Brexit debate. I mean his true feelings are and were....

I think you are right that when Brexit is done he will be the scapegoat and a truer libertarian will take over. Gove or Raab probably.

The main issue was the gammonati simply assumed it had been reviewed because of Basil's goose stepping, leading to the usual foamy-mouthed indignation that has no bearing on the actual topic that we can expect

In terms of the nuance, compare the clip to Curry and Chips, the late 60s sitcom with a browned-up Spike Milligan playing an Irishman of Pakistani descent who various characters refer to as "[Indian slur] [Irish slur]" (and you can probably guess what those two are, the first being the same one that crops up a few times in Only Fools And Horses) which tried to mine the same vein as that clip, although if you do that for half an hour what tends to stick in people's minds isn't that it's showing up the bigots but instead a variety of characters are making various bigoted comments at a character played by somebody who browned up for the role

Gee, I wonder why it was axed after six episodes?

...although it gets depressing that there's one review for the boxset on Amazon saying that, as nobody was physically hurt by anything in it, that means the show is fine - which is an argument that legitimately has more errors in it than it does words

It's the same with the various Alf Garnett shows and things like Rising Damp.
If you find yourself agreeing with the main character, then you're doing something wrong.

That Spike Milligan sitcom sounds almost unbelievable, until you remember that someone made one about Hitler.
Heil Honey I'm Home! was released in 1990 and cancelled after one episode.

It was absolutely ****, which didn't help.

It's similar to how the alt right think the message of Fight Club is that you should all strive to be like Tyler Durden as he is smart, capable, and most importantly, free in all the ways that you are not...which misses the point that the character is a complete sociopath who should absolutely not emulate

The thing with Curry and Chips is it wasn't the only sitcom featuring Milligan browning up, as he did the same thing in the mid-70s playing a Pakistani migrant in The Melting Pot...which got yanked after one episode was broadcast, with the remainder of the series buried deep in the BBC vaults alongside other things they don't want broadcast such as any news story critical of de Pfeffel and his band of merry reapers

And who, of course,
doesn't actually exist, except as a symptom of a mental illness
.

I think I'm having a dig against Nazi activity....which appears to be alive and well....in some places!

It's pretty pointless judging stuff that went on in tv and theatre all those years ago. The past is a different country and they did things differently there.

The Black and White Minstrel Show was on every Saturday night. In 'It Ain't Half Hot Mum', Michael Bates 'blacked up' to play Rangi and the 'artistic' Bombadier Beaumont was called 'Gloria' and mocked for appearing to be gay. Racial issues were appearing in 'Mind Your Language', 'Love Thy Neighbour' and 'Til Death Us Do Part'. Most of them have to be avoided, because they were of their time and are dreadfully crass and insulting.

My girls hate the early Bond movies because of the sexism, others object to the obligatory smoking...and it runs through pretty much everything on tv for decades. If you go back further, Othello was always a 'blacked up' white guy and prior to that, women were played by young men and boys.

Looked at through modern eyes, it's pretty dreadful...but it wasn't meant to be watched by modern audiences. We just need to try to avoid going back there in this Brexit era of Bonking Boris.

I disagree about Till Death Us Do Part. Alf Garnett's never been more relevant, unfortunately.
He's clearly the villain of the piece and his views are demonstrated to be outdated and ignorant, which is where much of the humour comes from.

You probably don't want to tell them about Sean Connery's views on domestic violence, then...
