Learn something new everyday. I see that in 2010 they discovered that it wasn’t built by slaves.

Anyway I believe they were built before the world was last wiped out. There is no way 4000 years ago, they could cut stone all the same size by chiselling it. Also to calculate the footprint takes a lot.

As you were then.
For many years the belief was they were built by slaves, would have been bit of a bastard had they been pulled down only to find later they weren’t

How do you guys equate the murder of one British soldier to the enslavement of millions of black people? You're showing the bias right there and you don't even realise you're doing it.

Not to mention the fact that Lee Rigby has been adopted as the poster-boy for every right-wing march and rally up and down the country ever since. There was a complete and utter outcry, and quite rightly too, so I've no idea where you've got this idea from, that everyone just put up and shut up.

And please stop saying people are trying to 'erase culture and history'. It's the second time you've done it and it's completely and utterly untrue. Highlighting a bit of history that Britain tried to hide (as it so often does) is not erasing it.

I'd like to see you back this up.It's really not the case - one of my lecturers at uni hated the EU, and coming out of school I had far more right-wing views than I do now. I've read Tommy Robinson's book, I've watched his speeches, none of my left-wing-ness comes from my education in any way. I've been on both sides, and this idea that unis and the like indoctrinate kids is a total fallacy. If anything, university these days is full of posh Tory wannabe's rather than left-wing do-gooders.

Please, just for the 2 of you. No. One. Is. Erasing. History.
I hope you don't wear, drink, use or are advantaged in anyway by slavery, especially modern slavery that is still being practised in some countries.. Apparently there are still parts of Africa that benefit from their own slaves...and so it still goes on even with their own people..

Just out of interest how can these historians actually know? They didn’t exactly write contracts when they built it?
I don’t know for sure , but think they’ve found the villages that housed the workers & they were obviously reasonably well off , found expensive artefacts etc , so not slaves .

Ok a random comment as I seen it on Bristol post but how the **** is it acceptable to call a group of people “right wing, nazis and racists” for protecting a ****ing war memorial from being vandalised and defaced by a group of thugs.

Kind of like how it’s also “racist” to celebrate St George’s day and hang out flags, being proud to be white and from this country will be a crime soon.

Small rant over

once again spouting un factual comments …

Britain has never tried to hide "a bit of history" again unfounded comments Britain has embraced its history as have most nations of the world. it has been until the last year or so what we and the world have learned to move on to a more civilized humanity.

Personally I'd rather see the statues of Colston, Rhodes and everyone else remain exactly where they are for now instead of this knee jerk reaction by councils across the country. Kowtowing to mob demands at the slightest hint of civil rebellion isn't what made Britain great originally

you are right, nations...cultures … religions have all benefitted from some form of " bad moment / bad event" in their past.
In some cases it is an accelerant to better things … the Egyptians with building..writing [thus leaving a record of their history ] most of the rest of the world at the time couldn't even write let alone read! look up your Egypt history to see who they attacked and enslaved. The romans... bridges of stone aquaducts and via ducts they enslaved nations throughout Europe [ their empire ] the slave trade as bad as it was not just whites going to Africa and kidnapping tribes to take across the atlantic it was tribes that would normally kill each other selling Prisoners into slavery for gifts rather than kill them … [ it still goes on today ...the killings and massacres ] ...what would we be arguing about today if slavery had not displaced individuals halfway round the world? As Britons we are a mixture of humans that are indigenous to the british isles who were "enslaved by the romans and then the normans "

Now of course I find it extraordinary that the statue survived as long as it did.
until the last 2 or 3 years under the present mayor the "unrest" has grown.... don't be fooled that his fortune came from slavery [ Colston posted comments elsewhere ]

As a former colony of Rome, everyone looks positively at Roman statues and mosaics and wonders at Bath and all the technology they brought to our islands, yet they didn’t come here peacefully at all - they invaded our land, enslaved and massacred our people, killed our leaders and enforced their ideals, civilisation, technology and architecture on us and yet we celebrate them as dragging us into civilisation.
answered this above

like all things Egyptian there is a number of " differing opinions" some of the archaeology points to massive areas of "townships" … where the occupants were well housed and looked after. Egypt is and certainly was an inhospitable place outside the "the nile valley" so " encouraged/captured from its many battles". prisoners were "encouraged allowed to integrate into Egypt society"

So now, a Baden Powell statue is being taken down because he was a ‘racist’ and ‘supported Hitler’ allegedly.

Jeez, I think I will stay in lockdown for another few months until all this nonsense goes away!

Pathetic, and it's becoming a joke, and the two questions I have is where will it end and who in government is going to stand up for the majority of us and what the majority of the country will probably want out of all of this ?

The latest is Ant & Dec apologising, the likely withdraw of the TV series Cops, the withdraw of the 1941 Disney Dumbo cartoon as it portrays views that are no longer appropriate.

But what about Gangster Rap that I'm told involves praising the killing of Police and such like ?
If all we've seen over the past week or so continues, and I'm sure it will, at least for a while, then offensive 'art' like that needs to also be banned.
This works both ways you know !

So, BP needs to be removed because he ‘supported Hitler’, yet Churchill who stood up to Hitler also attracts abuse by the same people?

ffs why not just take ALL statues down and have done with it all.
The Snowflakes have taken over.

Baden Powell, William Gladstone, Winston Churchill, Oliver Cromwell, Francis Drake, Cecil Rhodes, even Queen Victoria and the Cenotaph have gone, are going or under attack, the snowflakes and yob mobs are now in control,MP's take the knee and the police are in retreat, what a future.

It's sad to say, but the way things are going I'm glad I'm unlikely to be around in 30 years time!!

Left wing identity politics is so lemming like their norms are acceptable. The world is no open place of ideas. Freedom of speech and thought is their freedom, and they are its arbiters. Brexit is racist. Having views on open borders beyond their right on views is racist. Voting Conservative/UKIP racist. Thinking groomings gangs are evil is racist and Islamophobic (a term that spreads in-equality) ...

What should be unacceptable are the Avon and Somersets Superintendent's remarks. His officers allowed criminality to take place unchecked. His Police force took a decision that people attending a BLM demo would be treated unequally. These protestors were allowed freedoms that the rest of society are not - A decision was made not to uphold the law but to allow people to break it because of who they were.

The Avon and Somersets Superintendent made further remarks. He also chose to join in with the protestors group think. He chose to not be impartial. He maligned publically a small group of people protecting the Cenotaph from being vandalised. That is disgraceful. One cursory look at clips existing reveals one of the group was not white. An imbecile could work out that the picture the Superintendent was creatively painting was untrue. A policeman chose to lie to the media.

Ah yes, single out the minority. Another poster suckered in by the tabloids. But people will then praise the skinhead thugs “defending” war memorials in Plymouth.

Where the group skinheads? What actually would be wrong with that?

Your post is an example of the identity politics I mention above. It is yourself who is being suckered.

How do you guys equate the murder of one British soldier to the enslavement of millions of black people? You're showing the bias right there and you don't even realise you're doing it.

It is wholly logical to be biased cognitively to events that happen on this Isle, in this Century v those that do not.

What you are referring to or maybe not is compassion fade. However it is not logical to compare events from hundreds of years ago to the murder of Lee Rigby. Your comparison displays clear bias by equating events illogically by measuring them with a similar standard.

There is some great quality and intelligent debate happening on this forum, it's enjoyable, balanced and very welcome, I would just like to thank all contributors for joining in, self expression is wonderful to hear when it's free flowing but let's remember all opinions are valid, respected no matter what side or direction of thinking.

Thanks for the high standards, restraint and respect being shown to each other.

Perhaps the next stage (learning from history) will be a book burning session, where all Enid Blyton, Rudyard Kipling etc books are set alight in a city square. Perhaps paramilitary organisations should be formed to ensure that ordinary people conform?
The regular police are so crippled by political correctness that they are powerless to keep control.
This my friends is where we are heading.
