In this picture, what is strange about the lady bottom left with the dog?

The painting is from Renoir and the subject is Aline Charigot, who later became his wife and nurse - is she fondling the dog our strangling it ? Or there again is it her size - ie. she appears smaller than the others without actually sitting on anything - so was she vertically challenged ?

Or then again has she been painted over the original because Renoir didn't like the original model and replaced her with Aline Charigot ?

Yes that is correct. Renoir fell out with his friend that he had originally depicted in the painting, and overpainted her with Aline.

Cheers BB. Time for a plant description.
It is perennial, and the only member of its genus - though it has a Scottish cousin. It is related to several biennials and some dangerous plants and it could be mistaken for some of them. The Latin name establishes it as native to a region of Italy - though it grows wild also in parts of South East Germany - earlier it could have grown wild in other regions. In northern Europe it is mostly found in gardens. Unusually, it is tolerant to salt water, which may mean it was originally a coastal plant. What is it ?

Ok. Some clues. Despite the Italian connection it is more commonly used in German and French cooking (sometimes English). Only the seeds are used for culinary purposes in Italy. Harvesting is better done with gloves on a hot day !

Sorry more help needed on this one. I have been around all the ones I can think of and the botanist who lives with me is no help.
