I’ve seen this bloke talking and he usually starts off well, clear and direct, but kind of loses track towards the end. Here he mounts a powerful argument for us to ignore statisticians, because they can’t offer us any useful insights when we need them - now. To be fair he certainly isn’t a government stooge like the ones who stand either side of the politician of the day behind a lectern. He’s just a statistician, getting lost in the endless permutations and uncertainties of data. And even if we could get specific, comparable data between countries, it would be presented in some hideously misleading way. Personally I don’t think we need absolutely precise data to make comparisons. We can say with some confidence that some nations - us, Belgium, Spain, Italy, France - have a much higher death rate than others - Germany, Denmark, Sweden, New Zealand, Australia. There might be some demographic reasons behind some of this (Italy has a very old population), some societal reasons (the Italians, again, tend to mix a lot more between generations they don’t isolate their elders); there might be some systemic reasons (Germany apparently had capacity to test a lot quickly); there might be some policy reasons. The job is to work out what the places with broadly better results have done and then try to duplicate it if it is possible to copy (probably too late now). I just get the feeling that endless navel gazing about how precisely comparable the statistics are is just a diversionary tactic to stop us thinking about how badly things seem to be going.
So have I Mate, I’m just fed up of his continuous libellous and slanderous comments continually insinuating that I’m a racist, I’ve told him before and he just continues, he doesn’t know me, he’s never met me and because he doesn’t live here in the U.K. and I disagree with him over Brexit, he just assumes he can come on this thread and start insinuating I’m a racist, well I’m done with him, I have spoken with a family friend whom is a solicitor and he has assured me what Danish continually puts is slanderous and can be open to legal action.
If that is the case, why do you think that is? His politics? There are others who are certainly towards his political stance who other posters have reasonable conversation with, the common denominator here is one and one thing only.
May I just say that I have been a night shift and was sleeping while all this shenanigans has been going on. Elllers spitting his dummy out, throwing his toys out of the pram and going off in a huff was absolutely nothing to do with me.
I said that to a friend a few days ago, his response was that obviously in the light of people dying it is completely not important. However, of all the not important things, it is one of the most important. Firstly, it gives employment to thousands of people, not just the 22 we see on the pitch, or the managers/coaches, but also the people who check tickets at the turnstiles, the food and drinks providers who suddenly don't have thousands of customers every other Saturday. So many people are economically suffering because football is shut down. Also, another friend said to me today that yeah it isn't important, but at the same time, what makes us human? A bit philosophical, but does going to work, eating, drinking and sleeping make us feel alive? Or is it spending time with loved ones, having a pint in the pub with mates, and enjoying the passion and rivalry of sport?
Well I can without any shadow of a doubt state that you are not racist......well except when it comes to yorkshire people!
I really dont care about his politics, each to their own. He's our very own little princess and we really should not question his posts ever!
Coronavirus: Number 10 says face coverings have 'weak but positive effect' in slowing COVID-19. Oh ffs here we go, the science on a simple face mask may have just changed in the last week. How did I guess that right?? Hmmm I wonder.
Fair point but I've seen two friends pass away and another two still seriously ill. I know of drivers I worked with that have passed away, when that happens your perspective changes, it may also have something to do with my age making me far more aware of my and many other family members mortality. Football at the highest level is now a game it is so hard to relate to anymore. Players who have earned more money than we could imagine spending in a lifetime and who see the rest of us facing hardship and worse are actually doing everything to resist helping the very clubs who have made them what they are. It reminds me of the Pink Floyd track 'Money' and the line "I'm all right Jack keep your hands off my stack". They still don't get it and never will. I really feel sorry for the smaller clubs and many of their players that will take a hammering like many normal people but I'll never give a sh*t for those at the top...
The science changed. Foreign science is different to our science and changed quicker. Definitely nothing to do with not have adequate supplies.
Can I ask how old you are Sooper ?? Its just that your first paragraph is spot on for me. Im 51 this year and dunno if it’s ‘cos I’m getting older or ‘cos of the job I’m doing that I’m thinking more and more about my own mortality and that death is something that whatever happens, I’m not gonna escape it. I can remember so many things in my life, like they happened yesterday......the WC1990 in Turin being a focal point for me. I can remember it so clearly. I keep thinking that was 30 years ago...and in another 30 years I’ll be 80 years old...or probably dead. It makes me sad sometimes.
One day you wake up and realise that you are nearly sixty. You read that Michael Robinson died and think thats no age! You, only you, still think you are fairly young. You think...Jesus, when I was a kid 60 was about waiting to slip off this mortal coil. You have a complete disconnect from being old and feeling old.
Totally......in my head I’m still a 20 year old......time is now going far too quickly for my liking.
