Just to let you know I listened to a stats fella on TV today and he said a 1/3 of registry offices were closed over Easter and some deaths didn't get added to the list. He reckons may be up to 2000 more.

Be interesting to see the split between COVID deaths and the ‘mystery’ extra deaths of these 2000.

He is quite a political character. If I may say, he's not a fan of the Tories. His books are a good read.

One bit of good news, last week I mentioned a lady I had worked with for many years was in ICU, have now heard she was on dialysis and oxygen but after receiving anti - malaria drugs has improved enough to leave the unit. She's still serious but now out of immediate danger, she was always a tough old bird...

The government made the decision not to take up that scheme. Strangely as I am replying to your posts they are discussing it on the news. I did remember an article on this where an MP gave good reasons why they didn't commit to the scheme.

Sounds like a fair enough question though.

I believe the main part of the scheme was for ventilators. As we stand today we have enough capacity (as just confirmed). The reporter has just said that Starmer won't comment because he has nothing to complain about re ventilators. However, one part was for PPE and I have this funny feeling that they went for a cheaper option... China. <doh>

I can’t really buy that we have sufficient of anything when people are just being left to rot in care homes instead.

Sorry, mate you are talking rubbish. No one who needs a hospital has been refused. That came up the other day from one of the stupid journalists and he was put in his place by that female NHS representative. Actually his comments annoyed her.

Downing Street: UK did not miss out by opting out of EU PPE bulk order
The Guardian had reported that the UK missed opportunities to obtain PPE.

    By ANNABELLE DICKSON

LONDON — The U.K. did not miss out by opting out of an EU scheme to bulk-buy masks, gowns and gloves to protect care workers against COVID-19, Downing Street said on Tuesday.

Responding to a report in the Guardian that the U.K. missed three opportunities to be part of an EU procurement scheme for protective equipment, the prime minister's official spokesman told journalists: "Participating in this scheme would not have allowed us to do anything that we have not been able to do ourselves.”

“For the majority of PPE included in the EU scheme, the supply of items to participating countries is still subject to the European Commission signing off individual contracts with suppliers. [On] the placing of orders and negotiations on delivery schedules, we understand that participating countries may begin to receive PPE starting from two weeks after orders are placed, but delivery will be subject to the same demand pressures of all other procurement currently taking place."

Interesting turn of events. Hancock has just said regarding the EU scheme that we were asked if we wanted to be an associate member, he said 'Yes'. He went on "The scheme has not made anything available to us regarding PPE". If this is correct a few will be red-faced.
