One of my early freelance gigs was at BT in the early 1990s.
So 5-10 years after privatisation of the GPO.
You would not believe the depth of the org charts.

BT spent quite a bit of effort and resource in the immediate years trying to
purge themselves of many of those "middle management" layers.
I can assure you it's now done.

I did 10 years at BT from 86 to 96 so can concur on that, quite the most ludicrous employer for so many reasons. Did you like reading the internal job adverts to see if you could understand one word of the requirements? Presumably all ads had to go to the bullshit censor to ensure that all normal words were replaced by management speak. The only good thing they did for me is pay me a very generous redundancy, enabling me to buy my ex out of her part of the house, which set me up on the property ladder.

They still offer 2 years salary in some cases.

My mates told me when they worked as "Post Office Engineers",they picked up jobs to go to and would exchange one or two out of their areas so they could earn "bunts" or something. Extra money,I guess!!!? That was in the 60's and 70's.

I work for openreach . Not heard of the 2 year deals for a while now , it might be management . Ours if we are offered it is 9 months , My wife was offered 18 months ( she was TSO ) . She bit their hand off . She has just turned 60 and was thinking of going anyway .

Bloody good employer , just take a look at the real world !

Stupid wages for what we do !

Yeah, I work for Global and I have heard of 2 year offers, but 9 months is the standard.

I'm trying to work out which the more sociopathic response to Covid-19 deaths is

Trump fanboys: "Yeah, well, a few thousand people died of swine flu on Obama's watch..."

...or...

de Pfeffel fanboys: "Yeah, well, they were going to die anyway..."

And now, the problem with those two arguments

The Trump fanboy argument: the equivalent would be somebody saying something like "So what if 1789 people died of Covid-19 on Boris Johnson's watch? 10,738 people died of cholera when Lord Aberdeen was PM!" as if more people dying of a different disease when somebody else is in charge is relevant

The de Pfeffel fanboys one: that's uncannily similar to the defence Japanese serial killer Hiroshi Maeue used, as he preyed on suicide chatrooms to find the three people he murdered. Maeue was executed in 2009
