Really? I thought it was more a dig at Trump.

You won't find me bashing the NHS, my missus has been a nurse for over 20 years, and they are in full panic mode at the the moment, poorly equiped to cope with what's coming....

I tend to ignore all US based opinions on the NHS, or universal healthcare. I spoke to an American in Paris a while back, and he asked me how we cope with the healthcare...implying that it must be awful. I explained my son had been ill at birth, and spent 10 days in NICU, had surgery, went home for a year then returned to hospital for a second major surgery. I explained that we'd had the medical supplies we needed delivered to our door for the year. His first thought was to ask how we'd afforded it. "It was all free, didn't pay a penny, only had to sign consent forms."

He was shocked, and clearly struggled to match this description to the negative reports about healthcare in Europe that they hear in the US.

    Absolutely.
Every experience we've had with the NHS has been of exemplary service and care.
From a 12 year old with cancer to ongoing chronic pain problems etc etc.
I do realise, however, that this can depend upon your postcode.
We have the Oxford hospitals, which are world class facilities in many areas.

Very true, we felt very fortunate when we spoke to some other parents on the ward, who were travelling back and forth from Marseilles to Paris (about half a day on the train) to ensure their kid got the required care. We were walking for 20 minutes from home.

There is loads of propaganda largely from the middlemen of the American healthcare system - the insurers, ‘pharmacy benefit managers’ etc, who add no value to healthcare and stand to lose everything if it is rationalised.

Obama missed his chance - he could have reorganised healthcare along the lines of the Dutch and German insurance based systems simply through heavy regulation. His reforms did some good, massively reducing the number of uninsured people in the US, but still the inequalities remain. But they vote for this, Sanders gives them a choice but not even the Democrats will nominate him.

The French system is good, and they spend more per head on health than we do.

I thought the government here had a really good virus strategy, recognising that the epidemic can’t be stopped but can be managed, building up a ‘herd immunity’ and focussing efforts on protecting the vulnerable and flattening the peak so that the NHS has a better chance of coping. But it looks like they are being bullied into big gestures which might slow the spread but only until the measures are relaxed.
