    Is this called a Japanese acer?
    Was given one of these years ago, told it needed ericaceous soil. It thrived for about 10 years but then just died?

    We've got a herb border ... rosemarys, thymes, sages and chives ... lovely plants, wonderful aromas and great for cooking ... be careful with mint ... spreads very quickly <cheers>

    Yes you are correct, that is the name I have always known it by 'acer' - but it appears the name when searching for the plant/tree is generally given as Japanese Maple Tree on the internet.

    It's hard for me to remember, but mine lasted at the very least 20 years, in a full sun position, although I'm not sure if full sun is ideal, as it can scorch the leaves. I grew mine in the ground as a very young plant in what I can only describe as poor soil.

    Mine did the same as yours, it just died and I have no explanation to what caused that to happen, as it was lovely mature tree in the previous year.

    @Tobes

    So the olive tree. These are the ones you see everywhere.

    Nice enough but are you saying that if I plant it in a big pot it'll do this?

    Maybe not to that extreme but larger with the cool gnarly trunk?

    I’ve got an Olive tree in my front garden.

    If you’re gonna buy a large one in the pic above though, you’d better budget for around £500 !

    No I'm going to buy the small one, they are pretty cheap but I was wondering if they are the same thing and if planted in a large pot will it eventually grow into the same as the bottom picture.
