We've actually got one of the best transfer records of any club in terms of cash spent turning into squad value. We've also spent close to the maximum allowed under ffp rules. The only area we have had ant any problem with is strikers where our signings have not turned out well. And letting Llorente go was a mistake.
There has been a sense of internal tension as well.
There's long been a well attended school of thought that Mauricio Pochettino didn't want Lucas or Serge Aurier and used them accordingly.
Also, it's widely held that the club weren't sold on GKN or Vincent Janssen and they were right but MP was allowed to sign them anyway..
Chuck in the leaving it 'too damn late', last minute madness of days like today and failures like Moutinho, Grealish and Dybala and we're some way off getting it fully right, too. Our report card isn't straight A's and we can definitely do better.
We're not a club that can blitz the market for players that others want. Whilst ENIC own the club, that isn't going to change. We need a DoF whose sole job is to know the market and has the time to work the market, get deals in place during the season, that we can seal early and won't indulge in unnecessary brinksmanship at the 11th hour and 59th minute.
Generally agree but no-one gets it fully right. I've been a longstanding advocate of a DoF but it isn't guaranteed to make things better.
In 1993 we had similar revenues to Man Utd and the rest. By 2003 we were only 40% of Man Utd and well behind Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea as well. Over the 5 seasons to 2017-18 we had revenues about £600m worse than Arsenal. Yet we finished above them for the last three seasons and our revenues are now about 70% of Man Utd and slightly bigger than Arsenal and Chelsea.
Long term success can only be built on revenue. ENIC have done a good job both on increasing it and using it effectively.
Surely that is not realistic. Unless you are going to accept all the terms the selling club wants without argument you will always get deals going to the deadline regardless of when you start the process. It's part of the negotiation process. The proof of that is that we have a number of deals in place already.

Not necessarily true. Its generally about the best balance. Its why France won the world cup with giroud up top and him not needing to score any goals
It’s very possible they could be playing us but I do also think money will talk. They don’t particularly want Giroud and whilst they wouldn’t want to sell to us, if he’s only willing to leave on the basis he stays in London, they’re left with a choice of getting nothing or getting something from a rival.
The club has always had to address the expectations of the supporters, now more so than ever. We're charging absolute top dollar for tickets and have that additional income not to be arguing ourselves out of deals we can afford and really need.
We've become the 8th richest club in the world, it's time to lose that whiff of the Trotters Independent Traders transfer policy, that most accept we had to utilise just a few years ago.
There is an understandable desire to see that translated into a joined up transfer policy and much less of a last minute trolley dash, 5 minutes before the window closes because we've played chicken with other clubs over a relatively small sum, when compared to our ambitions.
We had Ndombele done early this summer because we wanted him enough to have got in early, courted him, his agent, Lyon, etc. We're paying him in line with how much we wanted him and we sold him the dream.
We did a similar deal with Luka Modric. If we're working the deals well in advance, it doesn't have to be done deep into the window. There are plenty of clubs who have their business done for the start of pre-season...imagine that?
With regards to our transfer policy, I think Power is partly right in that we have been very successful in general. We’ve operated on a far lower budget than our top six rivals and yet finished above at least two of them for the last 4 years and that’s been built through about 10 years worth of work by buying low selling high and hitting jackpot with certain players. That shows the “success” we’ve had with regards to signings as it isn’t always determined by how much money you spend/ pay but how good your scouting is.
However one thing I’ve noticed in the last 2-3 years is that whilst our scouting has been on the ball, our actual decision making or dealings haven’t been as good. There’s been a number of players we’ve either passed up on or failed to get over the line and that’s ultimately seen us decline in this time frame from a top four shoe-in to now an outsider looking in at present. Case in points:
Ricardo Pereira - arguably second best RB in the league at the moment with Leicester, we opted to sign the more expensive Aurier despite holding interest in Ricardo for a solid 12-18 months.
Youri Tielemans - scouted for about 2 years prior to him joining Leicester and even after his Leicester loan ended, Poch opted not to make a bid for him.
Jack Grealish - someone who really should’ve been a Spurs player in the summer of 18/19 yet we pissed about so much we allowed Villa’s new owners to block any move.
James Maddison - despite his comments about us years back, he’d been on our radar since his Coventry days. Since then he’s joined Norwich and then Leicester.
I’ve probably forgotten some others too. A combination of any of these four players over the last couple of years could’ve really helped us out and not seen us begin such a vast rebuild that we’re now trying. Hopefully we learn from these mistakes, we’ve made some good signings this season and even though we need more strengthening in certain areas, I’m hoping Jose’s reputation will help with any negotiations going forward in terms of getting our preferred targets over the line.

It does if the circumstances cause it. Your argument takes no account of the selling party if all agree to the terms then fine the deal is done early if not it will drag on to the last possible moment, especially if the selling club want to try to keep their player. All this complaining about Spurs dragging deals to the final moments of the window is not to face the real world of pro football. A negotiation between two parties is often difficult but three parties makes that even more tricky. The fact that Spurs have done deals early in the window shows that there is no conspiracy to drag them on. It's not a co incidence that the last deal is a striker is it! That is always the hardest player to find and when he is good the price is often astronomical. Just remind yourself of how many strikers we have had and how many actually work. I don't blame the club if they are cautious about spending millions on a striker that another club WANTS to sell. Nothing is for sure in football and the most uncertain position is striker.
Since the summer when we became the 8th richest club in the world we've spent close to £200m on transfers. I think that is more than any other PL club.
