It is a great arena, shame about the capacity as you say, would like it to get some larger acts in it.

Personally hope someone like Idles comes and plays there. Unlikely, but almost perfect for that sort of artist.

It didn’t feel small once we were inside the arena. I thought the acoustics were really good. Probably better than some of the Manchester venues we often end up at.

I’d liked to have seen 7k-10k capacity. We’ve got similar capacity venues to the Arena already. Still it was decent and with lots of car parks nearby and quick access to the roads, it may draw people from outside the area.

Every time I've been I have been in the standing area, so it's not as obvious what the size of the room is, I imagine if you are sat up in the Gods it feels huge. Acoustically its a belter.

Tbf Bonus Arena has attracted big acts.

From off the top of my head. Noel Gallagher, The Courteeners, Van Morrison, George Ezra, Sean Paul, WWE, Strictly and tons of the top comedians.

I think there's a lot who still wouldn't come though.

A few of those are names that have played in Hull in the past too. Noel has with Oasis, Courteneers definitely have, I saw them in Welly years ago. If Oasis were still a thing, neither of the Gallaghers would've played in Hull last year.

Enjoyed coming home to watch Spear at The Welly. Great to see some old Grammar school / Spiders friends, although I was completely shattered from the Manchester performance the night before.

Just seen some of George Norris's photos and videos from last night. Top class as always.
are they online? would appreciate a link, thanks.

They will be on the Facebook group page;

The Theatre of Hate and Spear of Destiny Barmy Army Page.

Hope you find them.

If not, you can send him a friend request and I'm sure he will forward them on to you as he's a top lad. You could mention me if you wish, just PM me for real name (it's not Vic....)

Julie Driscoll with the Brian Auger Trinity, Coventry 68.
Just re-reading this thread from the beginning & spotted your post.

First time I saw Julie Driscoll was in mid-late '65 when she was still with Steampacket (including Long John Baldry , Rod Stewart & Brian Auger).

They had a gig @ Leeds University when I was involved the the student union's entertainment committee. I forget who the supporting band(s) were, but they had just finished their set & L.J.B. couldn't find Julie D.

I was commandeered to search for her to get her on stage. With the help of a lady student, managed to find her in the ladies' washrooms ( slightly confused/disoriented), but managed to get her to accompany me to the stage for her performance. Lovely looking lass. Had a beer with LJB & her after their last set in the student bar afterwards. No idea where Rod Stewart got to afterwards as he wasn't in the bar.
Great night all in all.

Thanks for the info. I haven't been on facebook for years so this might encourage me to get back on board. I knew George back when I lived in Hull (I scarpered in 87). Haven't seen him for a couple of decades though every now and then I run into his brother, Johnny.

I think I left Hull in 85. It was John who I saw Spear with in Manchester the night before the Hull gig.

Yes, just got back. Very good. First time I’ve been to the Bonus Arena. It exceeded my expectations, despite the low capacity it was surprisingly good.

I was there too and really enjoyed it. Enjoyed both Razorlight and Kaiser Chiefs but missed the opening act.

The dad dancing up in VIP was hilarious if you saw that.
