What you've said here makes sense but when you say Lovren is 4th choice to me means he has very little chance of playing. In reality he can fit in any rotation of the defensive pairing and get decent game time.
Let's hope this new cb is quick enough to run in the opposite direction and fiendishly play attackers offside. It winds some people up so much that they want to get rid of VAR.
Think having 3 quick cb's will allow us the option, sometimes, to play 3 at the back, with Trent and Robbo more wingers than backs. two in midfield (Fab + 1), and three forwards. Or three in midfield with 2 up top. Options, options. A great team can play many formations and adapt to injuries and rotation. Happy days.
I guess I just looked at it differently. Any other position and you say X is 4th choice means they are actually 4th in pecking order. The central defence is a pairing so each player hasn't got 3 other paired up choices before him, only 2.
I would tend to agree with JB, or I can at least see his point. Virgil is a fixture so that leaves 3 competing for the other place - of which Lovren is 3rd choice. Looked at another way, 4 players for 2 places isn't really over-stuffed - especially as Matip, Gomez, and Lovren himself are all rather injury prone, so I wouldn't be happy to let Lovren go without a decent replacement. If he wants to go because of restricted game-time then that's his choice. I wouldn't want us to be paying big money (by today's standards) for someone unless he walks into the first team, and currently I'm happy with the combination of Virgil and Gomez or Matip. Lovren is, for me, a decent enough back-up.
I said 4th in the pecking order, which is exactly what he is. I understand your point but if all players are fit, he plays rarely. Clearly that’s not the case right now but he knows the score. I think there was a point last season when JK played Fab rather than Lovren. He improved this season tbf but reality is that he’s not going to be happy being the last choice. He’s gone in the summer imo but we MUST replace.
I would agree with you both but Matip is proving very injury prone - Lovren is prone to mistakes though he does seem to be okay in the big games So I think we need someone else maybe not this guy at 65mil but defo one more
I still don't agree. He isn't 4th in the pecking order when he's part of a pair. The only way he's 4th is if Virgil is part of the rotation and he isn't. It's Virgil + 1, 2 or 3. Pedantic, probably but I thought I'd overlooked another CB. Given what saint has said as well, I wouldn't be happy to lose Lovren (even though I probably was this time last year).
I'm fairly easy going tbh. The thing is we both acknowledge and accept each other's point of view which is quite refreshing considering some of the arguments that break out on here
