Ive bought my lads (7), their first ever games console this Xmas. The problem is I havent been anywhere near a console since i stopped playing Street fighter 2 on my Super Nintendo about 25 years ago.

Ive decided to set my lads ps4 up tonight to try and avoid any complications on Xmas morn that would ruin the excitement for them. Ive heard i need to use my Bank details and create an account? Is this true??

You have to create an account but you can add / remove payment details whenever you want to.

When i set my lads up 2 yeras ago i don't recall needing bank details. It may have changed since then.

The only reason i could think that you'd need it is to set up and online account so that they can purchase and dowload games stright to the console.

Don't save the bank details, as long as they have a psn account they can play online.

Might be worth installing any games you have got them as well, that can take bloody ages

    No problem.

It would be worth checking the account settings when you think your finished, just to make sure you have deleted the payment details.

It's so easy to auto click, download and buy stuff if the payment details are saved

I’ve not played a computer game since that squash type game in the 80s. Bounce constantly if you angled it right

Putting the password in and the downloading up dates is annoying/lenghty but worth it. i Recommend skyrim fantastic game, red or dead redemption is great as well.

This is the number one tip.

Pretty much every game has a lot of updates to download before you can play the online features and some of these are like 60gb+ so if you have a slow internet connection can a full day.

Plus on Christmas Morning everyone who has a new game and lots will want the same one will all be downloading updates at the same time which will slow down the server.

As has been said, install the games.

They can take hours even on a perfect broadband connection.

Hmm you've given me a Christmas money making scheme there...

Anybody need updates on a PS4/Xbox one or setting up fully with the games?

Pay me and I'll take the machine into the office where its empty with a 1gig connection take longer to drive to the office than the download would :emoticon-0102-bigsm

I’ve a 1gig connection in my gaff mate and it still takes its time.

There’s barely a device on the market capable of handling 1gig speeds yet, and game consoles top out around 20% of that.

Its technology for the future, even top end smart phones max out around 360mbps.

You have 1 gig in your house?

You jammy sod... <laugh> I have 4.5meg I bought GTA V and Grand Turismo took me a week to download the 120+ gig updates doing overnight jobs so didn't nail all bandwith.

Was complaining at work and manager said just bring it and update it here, but was already done by then.

Years ago when the playstation online was hacked i requested my card details were removed for security and i think did it manually.
The next time my 12 month membership was due i got my card out ready only to find they still had the details on record ffs :(

You can buy the online membership on a card from supermarkets or Curry's etc just like on PAYG phones, just type the code in.
Saves putting your bank details in and your kids buying add ons and other games etc.

If you do pay by card it should ask if you want to save details or not but like i said at the start ;)

You dont need the membership to play the games and download updates mind. Its if you want to play online gaming against others.

Yeah we have a company called Hyperoptic in the building, they only provide to about 30,000 homes in UK but it’s incredible.

You don’t share a connection, they build an individual one for your own property, and it never blinks.

It cannot be underestimated the power of good broadband, before they came in we could only get about 4mb, so when they came on the scene it was a good moment!
