    No Dave, it was a simple enough question. If the islands are named after a dog, why are they called The Canaries?

    "Because this is where the different type Canary birds were first found.

    The guy who discovered them had his dog with him and the dog ate some of these birds and the owner killed the dog.

    The dog was called dodo and this is where the phrase "Dead as a door knob" comes from."

    Lanzarote , Spanish for Labrador

    Gran canaria literally means big canine

    Latin for dog is "canaria", pretty sure I monsplained this already. The islands had/have lots of dogs on them. The birds were named after the islands.
