Mods. This thread had probably outlived its usefulness now. Now that we’re branching into politics and whereabouts in Spain is nicer to retire to, it’s best this is closed for further replies. Only my opinion of course.

 

Money, simple as that.

The government accepted EU grants (bribes) on the condition that once closed, shipbuilding wouldn’t restart on the Wear. There were attempts to reopen Pallion a few years after but it wasn’t allowed due to the EU ruling. Pallion and A&P had some of the best shipbuilding facilities in the world at the time and they were quickly dismantled.

Might be just me being cynical, but it all seemed to coincide with the arrival of Nissan.

Nissan was built and lots of Civil Service jobs relocated to the North East as a bribe by Thatcher for closing the coal mining industry down. British government did not have to accept EU grants regarding shipbuilding, they were more than happy to take the money. After all they indirectly sold all our utilities to the French and Germans via privatisation. Selling the family jewels back to the family as Thatcher said. No they already belonged to the bloody family Maggie

 

You asked what benefit Brussels would get, not the British government. Brussels not only encouraged the shut down but put a long time limit on when shipbuilding could be re-started

 

The TORY government of Margaret Thatcher closed the shipyards as they were the only people with the power to do it. Brussels did not have that power, the TORY government then applied for grants for regeneration from the EU, which were given with conditions about future shipbuilding which the TORY government agreed to. Not hard to spot the link is it?

 

Is the club being nationalised then?

 

Enjoying the shipyard crack. Like many, me granda worked there and at the time losing that industry was unthinkable. An incredible amount of the world's shipping was designed, built and maintained in the UK as recently as the 1950s.

Competition from countries like Japan and South Korea was inevitable but to effectively shut down the entire industry then subject ourselves to EU rules (ie Article 346 of the Treaty of the Functioning of the European Union) that state commercial ships must be open to international competition was a belt and braces stitch-up.

Replacing it with Nissan was like filling up a hull breach with mashed potato and calling it job done.

 

As you say the government decided to shut down the industry AND to subject ourselves to regulations. EU could not shut down shipbuilding that is rewriting history and downright lies that quite frankly are as big a whopper as Pound Shop Trump Johnson comes out with. Alternative truth as lies are now called iirc
