Indeed. I first heard the SDG version, followed by SF then BH.

Wonder, if like many a boy wonder, did Winwood peak too soon?

He had a very good career. He went from covers to doing his own stuff. There was a documentary on TV about him a couple of years ago. Interesting bloke to listen to, very level headed.
I remember Paul Jones of Manfred Mann saying he had seen him in Birmingham when he was 15 and telling everyone in London to make on because when this kids comes down here we’ve all had it.

He's had a career, granted.

It's subjective, naturally, but can't think of anything post SDG that moves me in the same way.

Can't speak for Winwood, but money acquired doesn't impress me in popular music/arts.
Nor me. It does suggest, in his case, he remained popular (a fair wad over 50 + years.). Do you think he peaked , by whatever criteria you define ? His peers always seemed to respect his (enduring) talent. I certainly have.

Fair enough.

I suppose peaked was too contentious. He is respected by many I respect.

I was just projecting my tastes (that is from what I've heard, I like SDG over Traffic and everything else he's been (bar session stuff) involved in since).

A fan since I heard this. Couldn’t believe a 16 year old could sound like that. Stevie Winwood was responsible for a lot of us spending a fair amount on checked shirts.<laugh>

This wasn’t a hit but is one of my SDG favourites. Again you thought how can a young kid sound like that?

Indeed. Especially for a white kid.

On a similar ish theme, how about Frankie Lymon though? Think he was well into his career (and about 14 years old) when he recorded this - when I first heard it I thought it was an experienced female vocalist

My grandson was at my house the other week. I said to him at 13 you spend all your time on your XBox, this is what some 13 year olds were doing. To be fair to him, he was quite impressed.<laugh>
