So Johnson has blinked and now accepts Northern Ireland staying in the Customs Union. He may well now agree a deal with the EU, but can it get through parliament? The DUP will surely not approve and the ERG won't like it either, so a lot of opposition support will be needed and this will only be forthcoming if a referendum is attached.

If anything was certain in this whole sorry fiasco it was that the leader of a minority government (entirely self-inflicted status) who withdraws the whip from those who have not swallowed the Brexit no deal optimism would finally force the opposition to get their act together sufficiently to prevent leaving without a deal. I agree with you though that there clearly are more twists on the way. The most obvious possibility, and the bookies favourite, being that he would throw the DUP under the juggernaut - the only surprise is the speed with which he is doing it after his love in while in Belfast.
