A frustrating last day where yet again we left ourselves a mountain to climb. Why we have go after everything, when batting, like our lives depend upon it baffles me. Surely we should have been capable of putting the breaks on as we were never going to chase that score down.
Is it time for Root to step aside? I think his leadership has been at best weak in this series.

That's a very good question and probably just my frustration at yet again coming up short. Root never inspires me, he always look like he's been caught in the headlights.

The guy I think would make a good captain can't even get into the side, Jos Buttler.

And in fairness to Root. The ECB took their eye off the ball massive and focused on the one day team which hasnt helped us during the ashes

We need to appoint 2 coaches IMO and properly segregate the 2 side

Only Root, Stokes, Bairstow, Woakes, Archer and Moeen should be in both team

Roy and Buttler should be 1 day only players

Time for Curran, Foakes, Pope and Stone to get chances in the test team

I always liked Buttler and still think he's the best WK we have. I take it your not a fan?

Edit, not sure what's going on with the quotes?

Foakes is our best keeper by far. He is a test player though not 1 day

I like Buttler but not as a test player

Now, in a few years time someone will probably inspect the urn and find out it's been replaced with an MDF replica one.

Buttler is in the side? Nor for much longer, hopefully.

Agree that Foakes should be keeper in the test team. That leaves Bairstow specialising (or attempting to) as a 3 in the test team.

Which gives Root his preferred hiding place at four and, in the process, being stripped of the captaincy with the other hand. He's a poor captain. Ridiculously bad in fact.

I don't know who should be test captain though? We need to look through the county game for that, not the one day game.

Not if Smith swapped it for his fibre board one, complete with burnt sandpaper sawdust, but you've ruined the moment now.

    Problem with the captain

You cant burden Stokes. He has too much already as an all rounder.

Only other players who have a test future are Broad, Archer, Bairstow, Burns, Moeen, Woakes and Root

I think Broad is too far down the line to become captain. Archer and Burns are new to the team

    Woakes and Bairstow arent captains

    Moeen Ali isnt consistent enough

    So that leaves Root

I think Anderson will retire now and should with his age and injuries. We need to start again even if it means suffering for a year while players find their feet so then when we go down under we can bring the ashes home again. I dont think Australia are a good side. Their batting line up is as weak as ours other then Smith. They just won more sessions then us

Its a pity they didn't give the captaincy to Broad after Cook.

His form hadn't been great for a while before this ashes and maybe that played a part.

For me Root is too soft for a captain and his strategy questionable.

Broad has got a set of balls and doesn't mind mixing it with Australians.

I'd much prefer Root just focusing on his batting.

Bayliss has been great for the short forms but ****ing useless with test cricket although its not just his fault the way the team currently is.

Curran should be in the team imo and we should be picking more test specialists rather than odi players penned into the team.

I'd also have dropped Bairstow and given Foakes another go - he didn't deserve to lose his place last time and lets face it only did so because Bairstow got the hump and couldn't perform as an out an out batsman.

For me there are a few in that team who think they can't be dropped - Bairstow is one of them - Roots mate.

Fear of them retiring from test cricket when dropped is obviously an issue.

We've been crap for too long now and this needs to be addressed but it won't be as the ECB only care about money and that stupid ****ing 100 idea :headbang:

I fear for the future of test cricket.

Bairstow would be in the team purely as a batsman for me. Foakes would have the gloves

Burns has earned his chance to continue. Roy and Buttler wouldnt be in the test team any more. Sam Curran would have played alot in this series if it was upto me going forward

I would let Root decide if he wants to continue as captain but I agree with Broad should have had it after Cook. But Broad only has another 2-3 years left in him now

Overton isnt a good enough bowler. Again our poor options with spinners have cost us. Nathan Lyon has struggled aswell but Moeen blows too hot and cold. Leach hasnt exactly taken his chance. That no ball Smith dismissal is unforgivable in my book

Going forward only Burns, Root, Stokes, Bairstow, Woakes, Curran, Broad and Archer would stay in the test side. Moeen and Leach make it as no one else is better so stay by default

Time for Foakes, Pope, Stone, Crawley, Sibley to get their chance as too many people are their on their white ball ability

His drop in form coincided with him becoming captain.

That was a very hard chance. 50/50 chance it either sticks or doesnt

But still moments dont decide cricket like football does.

Siddle has caught 2 like that this series though
