It is strange timing but I’m glad. We will hopefully recoup the £20m we splashed on him which is great considering he’s 30, injury prone and massively error prone.
It’s just the timing for me. One injury to the wrong player and our squad will be stretched beyond belief.... We must have saved some serious wedge this summer. We’ve knocked the wages of Sturridge, Moreno, Mignolet and now Lovren? And replaced them with kids on much lower wages. That’s great business sense....I’m not sure it’s great football sense. Time will tell.
considering how stretched we were last year it is madness to go into this season with a thinner squad.
Lovren is worth his wages just to keep Mo happy. Seriously, I'm with those who question the timing. Lovren does most things right most of the time, but does have that massive error in him, waiting to happen. Certainly we can improve on him, but we haven't done so far. Unless the young lads really are good enough we still need him as back-up, imo.
Our transfer business may turn out terrible in the short term, but as a long term strategy it looks to make more sense. We are moving on the older or more expensive drains on our budget and replacing them with younger cheaper alternatives. I think every one would groan when we saw lovren in the team, would we feel less or more confident if van de berg was called upon. Same with migs and Moreno, can our youth prospects be any worse than Moreno. As we are shipping out alot if the expensive deadwood, for the first time in years we havnt just gone and bought another lot of deadwood to replace them with, the scattergun approach to transfers is finally done. We have specific targets to improve the first team, we dont buy reserves we buy youth that will hopefully become first team. With the transfer market going the way it is, I think spurs approach last year and ours this year may become more common.
Great points. But can we win the league this year like this? I’m all for buying the megastars of the future before they even become stars but that’s what pretty much every mid table team try to do and they are....well, mid table.....you need to buy ready made players to compliment that strategy imo. Ah well, we will see; JK does very little wrong in the transfer market so he must have huge faith in these kids.
I think we would buy 'ready made ' players, but only if they are the ones we want. I think the days of signing a player for the sake of it may be done for the time being. As for winning the league this year who knows, but I think the strategy is for us to challenge every year, rather than hoping a punt in the dark brings us closer this year.
Yes of course it should be. But if we cannot take, say £100m and invest it in the squad without that being a ‘punt in the dark’ under this manager, then there’s something wrong. Perhaps last year, we overstretched ourselves financially and it requires the balancing of books that we may just be seeing.
Think they've looked at his resale value and decided its best to sell now. He's 30 and isn't first choice, his value is going to drop after this season. imo its no big loss, never been fond of Lovren from day one. He stick his foot in his mouth too often for his ability and is prone to making too many simple errors.
Its possible, but I dont think we've spent a massive amount over the past 3 years considering the revenue that has come in. When I say a punt in the dark, I meant in the past we would have a target, not get him so would panic and buy some one out the blue just because we felt we needed someone. It looks like we have a much more considered approach to transfers now, if we want a player we will go after him, but if they dont want to come or if the selling club gets giddy and demans silly money then I think where happy to hold our horses until the deal is right.
Then you pretty much hold your horses on a PL challenge. It doesn’t always work but generally, spending = titles.
This is the happiest day of my life. Potentially £20m for this walking calamity. Even as a back up option, I have zero faith in him as a defender. Don’t agree that he’s solid for most of the time - his huge errors will always get noticed but he still makes several basic mistakes each game. It’s not ideal but I’m guessing there will be more opportunities for Hoever and Sepp. I would like to see Hoever a little more - he definitely looks special.
You haven’t had much of a life mate, have you? I don’t think that anybody’s arguing that he was great. Just that the timing of it is bad.
Guess this sorts out the optimists from the pessimists. We are a bad injury away (to Adrian) from Andy Lonegran in goal for the next month or so.
If we want to play that game, there is no point having the league, might as well just give it to city. One point was all it was last year, we spent, but we spent money we had earmt wisely.
To challenge every year means you need to constantly improve the team and squad though because that's what other clubs try to do, so far we've replaced the deadwood with kids. Lovren still played 18 times for us last season as 4th choice, Sturridge 27 appearances...that's a lot of faith in either being injury free or in the kids' ability to step up. I'm all for waiting for a player Klopp wants, but I can't believe there's so few players that meet his requirements that we effectively bought no first team players all summer when this has been our best platform to improve in a long time...Maybe not his first pick, but even his second choice from the entire list of forwards in world football as backup? Not a single player in the whole world who would be happy being a rotational forward with the European champions and PL runners up with a squad made up of young, talented, enthusiastic players led by one of the best managers in the world? Even considering how heavily we spent last year (I know we recouped so much of it through sales, but we pay an enormous amount as a club on top of the 'headline figure'), we made record profits and earnings through TV, prizemoney and sponsorhips...no one. It's not sitting right with me that we signed no one.
Where @moreinjuredthanowen when you need an Edwards conspiracy theory?? We’ve gone from a perfect summer for transfers to a diabolical one. I’d have thought that would have been enough to entice him back here to tell us he told us so!! #bringbackmito
