He’ll certainly be a trailblazer in the UK. Much kudos for having the strength of character to be the first. Like others have said it shouldn’t really be the big deal that it clearly will be.

Do you think this has been prompted by the number of openly gay women at the World Cup?

Probably prompted by it being Pride in London this weekend.

or was justin fashanu the first?

his story didn't end well and might have deterred many more. one hopes people are far less judgmental these days, but expects that not all are.

Not saying it isnt going to happen but didn’t this same story come out last season

It's one of those things that isn't a big deal but will be a big deal. I just hope that the minority who will be ****s about this are ignored/shamed/educated, preferably the latter. Such things are, however, one more step along the road to everyone simply shrugging their shoulders and getting on with their own lives when they discover that someone is gay.

It's sad that there is a need for 'coming out' still. I look forward to the day when it isn't needed.

If this is real and not some internet weirdo on an attention seeking mission then I wish him all the best, commend his bravery and hope it all goes ok.

I do worry with the delay in announcing that the gutter press will be desperately trying to reveal it first and may 'go after' the wrong people and possibly ruin lives.

The gutter press would ruin lives either way, it's their job.

It is such a shame that this is being considered a big deal, because coming out shouldn't be a big deal. It should be respected and treated as normally as anything else.

It shouldn’t make a blind bit of difference to anyone, but as there’s plenty of gay footballers who all currently feel the need to hide their sexuality, it’s significant that someone’s finally going to try and change things.
I don't think anyone should 'feel the need to hide their sexuality' these days. Likewise no-one should feel the need to flaunt it. I don't think this is as big an issue as the media would like it to be.
There are obviously gay footballers, as there are gay everything else. But seriously, who gives a flying **** these days ?

Unfortunately, there's a lot of homophobic ****s out there who do care.

Not as many as you maybe think. Like racists, thugs and the like. They stand out. I mean 95% of people willl pass you in the street every day and you won't even notice them, because they're just good people.

The world is generally a really good place. It's too easy to see it as a bad place. ****s just stand out from the crowd.

I dropped a tenner getting out of a cab yesterday at Paddington. A little girl must have run 50 yards to give it back to me. I agree most people are good people. Unfortunately there is always a small vocal ****head minority in every aspect of life. Always has been, always will be.
