I've been a cricket nut since I was a small kid, probably because my Dad played. There are family holiday photos, taken when I was about 7 or 8, where I can be seen with a tiny transistor radio glued to my ear listening to the cricket. It seems ridiculous now, but I can remember a time - probably early sixties - when BBC1 would broadcast live the last few overs of Test matches played here. The evening news would be on at 5.55pm and would finish at 6.10, and they would then show 20 minutes of cricket. Barmy, but it was massive for me at the time.

I was the same, I remember in the 60s listening to a Test from the West Indies through the evening, I think it was the final day of series with England hanging on for a draw to win the series. It sounds strange but those days listening on the radio somehow stay in the memory more than watching on TV. The same was true of boxing and listening to the 1st Cooper v Ali fight, my mum was a boxing nut, I'd never seen her so animated when Cooper floored him, great memories...

Christ you're turning into a right old whinge-bag.
Turning into? I’ll have you know I’ve been an outstanding whinge-bag since I was knee high to a grasshopper, young man.

Just read that the highest UK tv audience for an England game in this World Cup has been about 1 million, compared nearly 12 million for the England-USA game, and 3.3m for Love Island. From what I have seen and read it has been a good tournament for those in the grounds, where the atmospheres have been great. It’s just not made any impact on the country as a whole, which is a real shame. That’s entirely down to the TV decisions. I might whine on about how everything was better in the old days (I know they weren’t) but the best ever cricketing experience was the 2005 Ashes which really did capture the whole nations imagination, and that’s not so long ago. That was the last series shown on terrestrial TV. It was immediately after this that the ECB sold the rights to Sky. Now they have recognised the impact on the popularity of the game as a whole and there will be live cricket on the BBC again next year, though I’m not so sure we need another new format, the Hundred, to boost the profile. Hope it works, but the number of people playing cricket has gone down hugely, and if you go to a state school there is a very small chance you will get to play it. Rugby Union, which you can still see on ordinary telly, is definitely the number 2 team sport now.

I love cricket, and it was the only sport I was vaguely any good at (not that that’s saying much) and just find it a bit sad what’s happened to the game in England. But you only need to look at India to see some hope.

I'm amazed so few cricket fans subscribe to Sky.
I agree it all should be on terrestrial tv.

I did add a smiley face to my post, but, for some reason they don't appear when I press 'post', from my phone.
Always works from my laptop.
I'm sure one of our tech geniuses on here can tell me why!?

I don’t have Sky for a couple of reasons. When I’m being especially poncey and holier than thou (hard to imagine, eh?) it’s about Murdoch and corporate media. But really I fear that I would go one of two ways with it - either barely watch at all and therefore waste my money, or more likely watch sport for 18 hours a day and never talk to my family.

Did you use the smiley menu from this site or the one on your phone? The latter doesn’t work on the site for some reason, you can only use the ones integrated into the site itself for some reason. When you are posting on the phone there is a tag at the bottom call Tools. Click on that, then edit on the sub menu, and a toolbar appears at the top of the post, including smiley faces. It’s a bit of a faff posting from the phone.

Is there a smiley that indicates irony?

Just looked it up.

Apparently it’s this one, also for sarcasm. Used exclusively to stop the literal minded from taking offence.

Not on the site menu though. Think my suggestion is more elegant :emoticon-0126-nerd:

Yes, your one's better.

Lol!

Watching now.
Aussies lose Carey.
275-7.
I think we're playing the Aussies in the semi.
Think you might be right. But when we play India in the final at least we will have beaten then once in the competition already. Or the Kiwis.

Watching Dan Evans lose in the fifth set at Wimbledon. He’s nearly very good, but clearly has temperament issues. Sport at the very top level, especially solo sports, is really all about character, nerve and handling pressure in order to exploit your talent.

Yeah, he's talented, but has a dodgy temperament.
