I was into Var, I've changed my mind. Spend a billion dollars / pounds / Euros on training a thousand elite referees instead

Yep. Feels like some american sport, not football anymore. Dreading next season. Six clubs hovering up all the decisions and the rest moaning about it.

They need to do something about the offside rule.

Brazil had no less than three players very clearly offside, a couple of them by ten yards. But the officials don’t want to raise the flag, on the crazy chance somehow someone isn’t offside and then they can go to VAR.

My problem was this is that because they will not call the offside, the defense has to play. So then you get the car where a defender has to make a desperation header or some other play because there’s attackers behind them. Then they’re going to say that because the defender played the ball before any attackers touched it, they gained no advantage. But they did gain a tremendous advantage. You just gave it to them. They can all be offside and force you to either stop and give them a clear goal, or make a tough play and essentially play them onside.

If you are going to use VAR, and let play go on, then a player in an offside position is offside, whether they touch the ball or not.

I'm a bit confused, France scored a goal and there was no VAR check and it wasn't disallowed for a foul 20 minutes ago?

I knew that penalty would be given, there was contact. But that contact did not make the girl go down. And over five minutes to work that out suggests its all rather BS. How long before Budwiester get a commercial break for the VAR decisions........its coming.

It is intriguing watching these matches as they almost seem to be a parody of football. I am not wishing to be controversial but I have seen a few of these games now and I am not convinced that this competition has been a good for the women's game. From what I have seen, the referees have been dreadful. I hope no one complains at St Mary's next season! The new rules have not helped and I think VAR has just flagged up the poor quality of refs.

The Cameroon v England game was a bit of a farce. I think Cameroon were unfortuante to have the goal chalked off and alot of the decisions seem to have had dire consequences and affected matches. It is interesting how few games seem to be won from goals scored in open play as opposed to penalties that , more often than not, seem to have been decided by VAR. I have not watched all the matches by any extent yet there seems to be sufficient to disucss to keep a football phone in busy for a whole season already. It would be much better if the games were decided more by skill than set pieces and dodgy refereeing decisions.

I am not sure how much the quality of what is being broadcast is typical of the women's game or due to the law changes having an adverse effect. It will be interesting to see what happens in August but this competition does not bode well. It is good that the competition brings a women's football to wider attention yet the competition this year seems to me to be bringing down the reputation of football. I cannot see a Cameron-style strike being seriously considered in the men's game. I do not feel that this behaviour , whilst understandable given the poor decisions, really squares with the professional game.

I'm not watching this match, just making the point that it's even worse live.

I can just imagine Mike Dean refusing to look at the monitor as he promises Spurs a penalty.
Yeah, it will be so much better in the prem. <laugh>
