I'd consider that a career progression myself but that's just how we interpret phrases.

for me a journeyman is someone who'd never made it and is at the plateau of his career or even headed down.

people not born with a silver spoon in their mouth have to progress like this, unlike the zidanes and guardiolas who are handed it due to their former lives.

In many ways gerrard trying a job outside LFC is "admirable" but perhaps ill advised where he went. Lampard took a BIG risk going to derby. It could still go wrong. you've got to work long and hard but take the right job at the right time... and avoid the knocks. Stay too long and one is inevitable.

In many ways mourinho is a perfect example of a man who took this approach. as he jumped ship a couple times... in many ways actually his time at real madrid was his over the peak moment as he probably stayed a season too long

That's how I see a journeyman, and that's in any profession imo, certainly in mine. Also add that a journeyman can be someone who hasn't lacked the opportunities to excel but doesn't because of a lack of ability or mindset.

Example of that as managers may be Moyes, Allardyce, Pardew, Koeman, Jol

Yeah allardyce... perfect.

The use of journeyman is open to interpretation.
It's a traditional guild term meaning someone who has completed an apprenticeship, who is qualified as a skilled craftsman, but has not yet reached the status of master craftsman (an official honour bestowed by the guild).
The modern usage tends to be of someone who is competent but not outstanding. There's a distinct difference there in assumptions of prestige.
Semantics are a bugger.
Masterpiece is another similar term. It referred to the piece of work a journeyman submitted to the guild that gained its creator master craftsman status. As such, one would only have one "masterpiece" in a career. Nowadays it is used for any work considered to be outstanding.
When I worked in printing in the Middle Ages, those traditional terms were still actively in use and presumably are to this day.
Reminiscent of printing's origins, a workplace was called a chapel, and the shop steward the "Father of the Chapel".
Apologies if you already knew all of this. You can go back to football now I've done my bit of smartarsery.

It was a bigger fluke than our 2001 FA Cup win. I remember the headline...News at 10 will begin when Man United score.
