The rumour that I heard about the deal for Begovic falling through was that we gave him and Pletikosa a medical in the same place at the same time!
Begovic thought that this meant he wasn't exactly first choice and the Croatian failed, despite coming back later and only playing once.

Sometimes you just have to <doh> Who in the Spurs camp had that bright idea?

Sorry, but I don't have much sympathy, and even less confidence, in Gomes. He's been given numerous opportunities to come good, and cut out the farcical mistakes, that he makes on a far too regular basis. If truth were to be told, i'm sure our defence lost confidence in him a long time ago.

Here, here, Gomes has made way too many mistakes and it's nice to watch Spurs again without worrying that our goalkeeper is going to make a horrific clanger.

How old is he?...he is what he is and won't be learning anything off Brad or anyone else anytime soon. He's not improved under constant tutoring from Parks, and its been the same type of errors since he's been here, and that doesn't seem to be teachable. To me its bravery and confidence, and he doesn't have any imo. Great shotstopper, but thats all. First time he's got some competition for his place, and he's whinging about leaving which is not the attitude in this league, tata from me!

You mean, Great shot stopper, unless it's straight at him;)

I know Croydon, I know!
It does seem to be a direct quote though and I'm sure it's been repeated in other vaunted annals of journalism, like The Sun.

I agree with Luke on this one, I feel Harry could have been more upfront with Gomes. Perhaps it was a test for him to see how he'd react to strong competition?

Some players thrive on it some don't and if reports are anything to go by he's folded to the pressure instead of taking on the challenge. We need strong mentalities at our club if we're to push on and Friedel looks to have given us some assurance at the back. Can't wait till Gallas comes back fit, think you'll see a much stronger defence.

King and Gallas at centre back is a drooling prospect! Though we'll be lucky to field them in the same team more than once a season!

I feel this is going to be the last season for King, I'm hoping Caulker can push on while at Swansea and give us another option next year. I just hope it doesn't destroy his confidence as there'll be a lot of pressure on him whilst there.

Really hope not, even if it means getting him on a PAYP deal, I've said a few times now that having King for a few games is better than having him for none, we look so much more assured at the back when he plays it's unreal. Caulker looks very promising, arguably the brightest talent that's come through the academy for a while, though I think another year on loan playing week in week out would benefit him more, hopefully at one of the top half table teams. Then come back and challenge Dawson and Kaboul and whoever else is around.

Having King around on a PAYP deal would've been fine before, but with the new squad rules it's a massive risk, especially if we're in Europe again.

Spot on smart, Gomes just does not have the right temprement and you cant teach that. Flapping & uncertainty and when hurt collapses in a heap like a little girl. Remeber the match when he wanted to come off & Harry ignored his signals. He managed the second half! Hmm!

I thought at the start of his career at Spurs he just needed time to adjust to the PL and he did have quite a decent run when he looked better and more assured. It all fell apart again after one or two errors. Nice guy I'm sure---------perhaps that's the problem.

I'd have King at any risk to be honest PNP. I have too much loyalty to the bloke! :D

I just think we brought in Friedel to try and get the best out of Gomes,in the knowledge that it was a win win situation(Friedel is a very good GK and would help Gomes, also free), unfortunately it seems like Gomes has fallen at the the 1st sign of competition.I really think this shows the true nature of Gomes,a great shot stopper, but far to weak in the area and no leadership qualities and i´m afraid a big baby to boot(so literally give him the boot asap).I´ve always liked Gomes,a nice guy and all that, but you can only make so many excuses and now it seems he has no back bone as well.Anyway i hope he finds somewhere or someone to take him but i really can´t see a top club coming in for him.

I agree Sex or Spurs i would have King if only for 10 games a year,i´m sure out of those 10 games we would pick up 25% more pts than without him.Which ofcourse could be the difference between of 4th or 5th.

Gomes is a very good goalkeeper (sometimes), but is just way too inconsistent and a liability at times. The back 4 have no confidence in him anymore and if we can find a quality January replacement then he should be allowed to leave.

'Arry ain't 'andled this too well.

Despite Friedel clearly being his no.1, he has made ambiguous statements about this and implied that Gomes may be selected as first choice. But Friedel hasn't missed a league game for over 5 years so it doesn't look like Gomes will get many opportunities in reality, except perhaps in cup games. 'Arry should have been straight with him when he signed Friedel. Liken Given at City, he could then make an informed decision whether to fight for his place (but knowing that he was seen as a no.2) or find a new club before the season started.

Spurs have another international goalkeeper in reserve too so it's not as if the club couldn't have let him go if the right offer had been made.

I disagree, if you knew Gomes you wouldn't have said that. HG is a sensitive character, bit of a woos if you ask me, if he were told in no uncertain terms, it would do his confidence no good whatsoever and you wouldn't get the best from him. BF could have copped an injury at any time meaning Gomes would be needed. I think Harry knew the hissy fit was coming and just delayed it by not telling him straight. Some might call it man management! :emoticon-0100-smile

That shows straight away why Harry was right bringing Friedel in. Totally the wrong reaction for a player to have. I'd accept the odd moment of motivation issues being there but first sign of losing place and he eyes the exit door? No thanks, you don't need players like that in a team.
