Off Topic Why is BBC4 TV such a brilliant DOCUMENTARY channel ?

Many of our older members will remember the '60s music like yesterday...BBC4 @ 11:00 p.m. tonight (Friday 19th) are repeating
"Totally '60s Psychedelic Rock at the BBC" . Younger members who've not seen it may enjoy also - I know some of you already do.
To suggest the whole of the '60s were somewhat blurry for me is an understatement, but an amazingly pleasant period !

Bloody 'ell, almost forgot. BBC4 at 9 pm ( Fri 19th), a documentary about Woody Guthrie. Somewhat of an influence !

 

Not a great lover of Billy Bragg but he did a good job fronting a very interesting programme about the song Rock Island line and how it kick started the music revolution in this country.
And, you learn something new every day. Never thought before why LPs are called albums but found out watching this programme. Well worth a look if you didn't see it. Link below-

Thanks for the reminder - missed it last weekend but was on my list to watch this weekend.
Lonnie D. was not too happy about the emergence of the Beatles et al in the early 60's. Essentially killed his popularity. He did have a decent run mind.

Edit: Just started watching it. It's gonna be interesting if an old biddy can say "The 50's early '60's were bloody awful 'cos there was no sex before marriage

Cheers for that, was a decent documentary. Can't remember exactly, this doc reminded me that somewhere on the BBC4 series "Blues America" was a great episode about the father/son gathering of blues "albums" (to use the term loosely !) John & Alan Lomax.
The stuff they dug up in their research had so much influence on the development of popular music from the '50s onwards. The stuff we've raved about for almost 70 years now spawned so many wealthy mega stars that their forebearers could only have dreamed of.
Worth a watch if you never saw it, assuming it's available on BBC iPlayer archives or perhaps youtube.

 

I certainly hope so.

Billy inspires even the most talentless among us to believe it can be done..

Yes, saw it. Very good. But the reason they are called albums didn't stick in my mind.

 

Noble in itself. Why the sarcasm then ? Has it not worked ?

 

Some posters seem to hold a candle for Billy Bragg.

Can't say I'm one of them. His 'magic' is lost on me.
