The trouble is once people have spent their dole money on White Lightning, rolling tobacco, tattoos, and fish and chips for the kids every night, there is not much money left to purchase a match ticket for Falling Down Park. Hence the 12,00 average gates at the moment...
You have to judge history in context. Preston won the League 2 years running, however the FL was a Northern and midland based league in those days, with big southern clubs like Arsenal, Spurs, Southampton and Millwall playing the Southern equivalent. It's why Southampton played in 2 cup finals and Spurs won the cup, when playing in the "Southern League". Bury won the cup twice in older days, Burnley the League. The Skates are like little Englanders convincing themselves that England is a great world leader, simply because we used to have an empire. It's changed and so has football. In the modern game (since players were allowed to move freely between clubs) Portsmouth's attandances and league placings hardly qualify for "big Club" status anymore than The UK can claim to be a super power.
I must say, you are all biting very well today. As OZ said 'do you expect too much' Well...yes you probably do- as he explained. Don't get too ahead of yourself ladies. There's a long way to go....and we're not finished yet either.
I think our expectations are quite realistic. It's our Chairman you should speak to..he's talking Champion's League!
Quackers, every person that joins Pompey (the last was a certain Stuart Gray I think) say the same thing.I quote 'Pompey are a massive club'. Well, maybe we're not massive and maybe we're struggling a little at the moment but in our respective clubs histories who has shined the brightest? There's really only one answer to that one.
Yep,It's Cortese's fault if it weren't for him I wouldn't even consider thinking about Champions league football!
So everyone who joins says it.................What a surprise , They're hardly likely to say "I've joined this run down shabby club, because Northampton sacked me and I can't get a job anywhere else, fingers crossed I may get paid on time, and I love the sound of bell ringing and the smell of rotting fish" are they? Player/Manager/Coach bigs up club he's signing for ...unbelievable...........................
I don't think anyone expects anything, don't know what saints fan gave you that opinion. We hope to do well like any other football fan does of their team and we have ambition but i haven't heard or read anywhere where a saints fan has said we're gunna walk this league,i think you're making things up in your head.
Think most Saints fans are amazed and excited about our start and you begin to dream, but I haven't met one who thinks this league is easy and a pushover. But, also, I've never met one who thinks we'll finish below pompey.
