So we seem to have reached the point where player power means that if they don't want to be subbed and they don't rate the manager then they can feel free to tell them to **** off. It's a really bizarre state of affairs. I think Chelsea would benefit from doing what we've done and gutting the majority of the squad because the players have way too much say.
Think this is being blown out of proportion by the media, personally. Sarri thought he was injured so made the sub, Kepa wasn't injured so told him he could stay on. Bit of a shambles on the communication front but I've seen the word "mutiny" used by the rags which is just farcical, honestly.
Do you reckon? Sarri looks absolutely enraged, there's a point at which he talks to the ref to make his final decision and after doing so starts tearing at his own clothes and storming off down the tunnel. Are those the actions of a man who realised he didn't need to make a sub after all? It's possible Kepa thought he was being subbed because of injury and was saying it was unnecessary but Sarri wanted to make a tactical switch to bring on a penalty specialist and Kepa shut it down. Sarri's speech about changing his mind was just bullshit to save face, mutiny was the perfect word to describe it.
Why would Sarri have kept back a sub until then if he didn't plan on changing keepers for the penalty shootout? It's something that managers have started to do, bring on the better keeper at pens. He undermined his manager in front of the world, no doubt.
Yeh well and truely undermined the manger Might aswell have the ball boy as a manager We shall see if he is picked to play again Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri says the incident involving goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga in the Carabao Cup final was a "misunderstanding". The club record £71m signing appeared to defy the Italian's attempt to substitute him in extra time before Manchester City won on penalties. Sarri appeared furious and walked down the tunnel before quickly returning. "I misunderstood the problem and only realised the situation when the doctor arrived at the bench," he said. "He understood I asked for a change for his physical problem. He said: 'I haven't a physical problem.' And he was right." Kepa later echoed his manager's words and insisted the incident was caused by "confusion". "It was misunderstood. In no moment was it my intention to disobey or anything like that with the boss," said the 24-year-old Spaniard. "It was two or three minutes of confusion until the medics got to the bench and they explained everything well. "He thought I couldn't continue, and - fundamentally - I was trying to say that physically I was fine." I don’t believe a word of that The manager has backed down
I think Sarri was badly undermined and I don't buy any of the club line about it being a misunderstanding. I also have no doubt that Kepa will start for Chelsea in their next game - it will be really interesting to see what the home fans make of that. I think that this transfer embargo could be the best thing to happen to Chelsea for a while as they'll be forced to bring in some of their youngsters which will hopefully change the dynamic of the club because it stinks at the moment.
Not the biggest outrage in footy yesterday surprisingly. The VAR decision to give RM a penalty trump's even this. Embarrassing day for football yesterday. Sent from my Moto G (5) using Tapatalk
I agree with this completely, press have had knives out for Sarri for weeks. They had a sub left as you get a 4th in Extra Time now, I don’t believe for a second he planned to change a £71million keeper for another on the basis that he once saved a couple pens in a shoot out. It was a farcical breakdown in communications, but it’s been made far worse by press. Sarri is just counting down the days to collection his compensation and going off to manage Roma or Inter next year anyway.
I forgot about that part to be honest. I still think he wanted to change it though. Seem to remember the Dutch doing it in the Euros or WC with Tim Krul and he saved a few pens. All psychological to **** with the oppo's minds. If he was genuinely fine why didn't he just run over and say "boss, I'm absolutely fine, no need to sub me" and Sarri would more than likely told Cabellero to sit down again.
Maybe it was based on who performed better on penalties in training? Guess we may not ever know if the sub was planned from before kick off, either way it's shameful and embarrassing for the game as neither player or manager behaved with class or dignity Sent from my Moto G (5) using Tapatalk
the other goalkeeper was better at pens. It was like watching two 10 year old kids in a tantrum to be honest.
I genuinely don’t think it was planned, not for a second, I’m sure Kepa has saved penalties this season as well and he certainly did for Bilbao. My thoughts are Sarri genuinely thought he was injured and due to the fact he barely speaks English he wasn’t clear it was cramp and thought he was soldiering on with an injury. The press are a shambles, you’ve had the chief writer of the BBC firing shots for weeks at the fella, forgetting he’s got a better record than Pep had in his first season at City. The Krul one has been planned and sicissed prior to match it was said, so any of us believe Kepa wouldn’t have been aware and therefore walked had it been planned? He should have walked, but I think he was genuinely, a young lad in his first cup final, trying to be clear he was ok. I thought Kepas interview made clear sense, I wasn’t convinced by Sarri I’ll admit. The world seen it all though and it’s another nail in his coffin regardless.
I find this hard to believe. Surely he's within his rights to refuse to pay the fine and crack on regardless.
Chelsea have been a mess for years because of stuff like this, they really need to stamp it out but no doubt he'll get away with it now he's got his fine, then later on Sarri will get sacked, new manager comes in and gives everyone a clean slate, repeat into infinity.
