If my missus was a pilot she'd dispel that theory.

It's obviously very sad, but I think there are some very interesting questions posed by this terrible event.

    1. What happens with the transfer fee I presume Cardiff have already paid? Is there insurance for this type of thing? If so an insurance company is about to go bump. Do Nantes have to pay money back? I know chunks are probably in instalments, but surely there won't be complex release requirements for each payment? Any contract lawyers want to wade in?

    2. There are a **** load of footballers in the world, why do so few die in their twenties and thirties? Should we all aim to be as fit and active?

    3. How dangerous is crossing the channel, something fat comedians can swim, in a plane? Single engine or not, these things are copiously checked before and after each flight, temperatures and weather patterns can be avoided or would cancel a flight, so how has this happened?

    4. This is the most insensitive question, but I am curious and twat enough to ignore the social norm. What is with grief thiefs? Other than their club shelling out a transfer fee, I don't understand the fanbase of a club a player has never played for, having prayers and well-wishers bestowed upon them. Nantes, I get, he has actually played for them and been in the town more than twice, built up a rapport with the fans etc, but aside from being the intended destination of doomed flight, I don't see why Cardiff fans need empathy. The family and friends of Sala are the only ones people should be thinking about.

If Tiote never played for us, and died on the way to move to Newcastle, I'd have found people offering us prayers really weird. If you must be religious to appease your own demons, do it for your own megalomania and people actually effected? Tbf, I didn't even understand people actually crying and gathering around Leicester because the owner went down with his mistress in a helicopter. Even if Mike Ashley was a reasonable owner, I'm not sure it would emotionally distress me to the point of tears if something similar happened. They are strangers. People get that this is just football right?

My guess on the contract point would be that once the contract is signed then all the fee is due whether it’s all up front or payable by instalments.

Cardiff will therefore owe Nantes the full fee probably by instalments over a set period.

Cardiff should have player insurance in place and so would/should incorporate life insurance meaning they claim on their insurance to get their money back.

Cardiff or their Insurers will then probably negotiate with Nantes as to what reduction there should be for early payment.

Yes, at the end of the day, players are a vital asset to a club, so life insurance is going to be a key part of any player's contract - ie PSG wouldn't run the risk on losing the 200m they paid for Neymar if he got hit by a car the day after signing.

The awkward question is how do Cardiff fill this position? Ie they've just spent big on the striker who they had hoped was gonna fire the goals to keep them in the Prem. A horrible time yes, but will they be brutally pragmatic and try and sign another big money striker in the next week? Cos they sure as hell didn't look like they'd stay up with their current team on Saturday.

I heard that too. It's very surprising that the pilot started out late at night. What's the point. Surely it would have been no issue to just travel to Cardiff in complete comfort rather than a little rattley single engine prop.

Bet Warnock is sat in his office now figuring out what the protocol is on how long you have to wait before signing a replacement. Knowing Ashley, he would invoke the seven year rule before declaring him dead when they can't find the body.

I'm saying we're better, but only in the sense that gonorrhea is better than syphillis.

Apparently witnesses have seen flares on a nearby island - fingers crossed for Sala and the pilot.

This would ****ing fantastic. But I think it was somewhat hopeful late reporting.

The Air Search 1 aircraft, combined with the Alderney and St Peter Port lifeboats and two UK Coast Guard helicopters, searched areas extending north and north-west of Les Casquets reef, a spokeswoman said.

She added: "During the search, reports of sightings of red flares were relayed by Guernsey Coastguard near to the island of Burhou, however nothing of significance was found."

In terms of unfortunate irony, that's on a level with Kurt Cobain singing "I swear that I don't have a gun" in Come As You Are.
