Fully agree... was the first in my family to go to University (my mum was the oldest of 9 and she taught me to read before I was 4) ... my eldest girl has an MA in English from Leeds University and my middle girl is currently in her first year at Cardiff Uni studying English and Creative writing ... they both got A * s at English A Level ...
Tel makes a good point as far as some people are concerned . My brother for example , read anything , but mostly fantasy . Escapism in reality , he would wander round at home , book in hand and never ever went out . He didn’t have a happy childhood for reasons I obviously won’t go into . It was not until much later in life that he started socialising etc . He still reads , but now he has 2 lovely daughters to read to . He likes reading stuff as well , but now it’s history or autobiographies etc . I have always liked reading , but for some , it’s becuase they have absolutely nothing else in their lives . My brother is living proof of that .
My boy turns 4 in a couple of months...will start to teach him the Quran. There's some right good bits in it.
Totally agree...I know someone who reads about 3 books a week. She's got a job, kids etc etc...but not an ounce of streetwise wisdom...so it beggars the question...what do you learn in all this? It must be something else...which beggars the question 'why did you take offence when I called your mind an empty place even though you have filled it with so many words' She was stumped A book reader can't **** with a streetwise Scholar
