What do most studies show is the number one way to increase your childrens intelligence and academic ability in their formative years? Read to them. Anything, it actually makes almost no difference what you read. I read the girl with the dragon tattoo to my 6 month old and carried on with the next two books whilst he got to about 15 months. Had to change material then as I didn't want his first word to be something like "rape".

What is then shown to be the main thing to improve academic performance from 6 to 18? Attendance. But reading is second!!

Reading simply does make you smarter (again the subject material makes startlingly little difference, don't think I'd ever denigrate anything anyone was reading it's surely a better use of their time than watching 99% of things on TV) and I say this as someone who used to read a lot but barely does nowadays. Kudos to those who make the time though. Mostly nowadays I just carry a book around with me and read a bit as I want my children to see me reading and I want my pupils to see me reading as it's going to make them more likely to and it's the best thing they could be doing with their spare time. Currently the bluff is very much working with my son, score!
Fully agree... was the first in my family to go to University (my mum was the oldest of 9 and she taught me to read before I was 4) ... my eldest girl has an MA in English from Leeds University and my middle girl is currently in her first year at Cardiff Uni studying English and Creative writing ... they both got A * s at English A Level ...

So talking to them then. Not reading, talking.

Tel makes a good point as far as some people are concerned .

My brother for example , read anything , but mostly fantasy . Escapism in reality , he would wander round at home , book in hand and never ever went out .

He didn’t have a happy childhood for reasons I obviously won’t go into .

It was not until much later in life that he started socialising etc . He still reads , but now he has 2 lovely daughters to read to . He likes reading stuff as well , but now it’s history or autobiographies etc .

I have always liked reading , but for some , it’s becuase they have absolutely nothing else in their lives . My brother is living proof of that .

Totally agree...I know someone who reads about 3 books a week. She's got a job, kids etc etc...but not an ounce of streetwise wisdom...so it beggars the question...what do you learn in all this?

It must be something else...which beggars the question 'why did you take offence when I called your mind an empty place even though you have filled it with so many words'

She was stumped

A book reader can't **** with a streetwise Scholar
