You could say their fans deserve better, but as highlighted earlier in your post, it's them that puts the pressure on their players and makes it so toxic. Booing as soon as they concede a goal at home and leaving after 20 minutes every week. They're passionate, but they channel it the wrong way entirely. Like all supporters, they deserve a club which is run well and in the interest of the community. But they've got no right to have a successful team, particularly as they're a big reason that they rarely have done over the last 10 years.
Yes they seem very reactive. Booing players, calling for the manager to be sacked, then cheering and happy when winning at HT. Then booing again when they draw/lose.

I remember in 1987 they brought 3 coaches (150 people) for a night game and they rattled around in the North stand.

Good times. bad times.

A number of times we have been to Sunderland 3 coaches would have been great. Went in 70s and we were only coach there. Which was an interesting experience after the game.

I went to roker park when there were only 2 coaches a bit later in 73? Next season we drew them in the cup and over 10 coaches were arranged but it got called off. Think again one or two went for the rearranged fixture.
Must have been the magic of the cup. Plus there was a lot of safety in numbers amongst City fans for a long time.

Some stats:-

70/71

City v SAFC att. 20,532
SAFC v City att 18,741

71/72
City v SAFC att. 26,091
SAFC v City att. 17, 621

72/73

City v SAFC att 11,141
SAFC v City att. 12, 637

So crowds similar or smaller than ours.....the Stokoe comes.

Yet they brought 3,000 here and we only took 2 coaches there. So heir away following always been better.

Our crowds dipped to 5,000. Then Pearson arrived.

did they bring 6,00 plus the season we played man utd? was there 21k at bp? then a couple of years later 19k?

just from memory, cba to google it.

1975/76 season -

City v Charlton 3rd April 4,565
City Oldham. 16th April 5,906
City v Sunderland 17th April 21, 296

SAFC 86 seasons in top flight, HCFC 5
SAFC 30 seasons in second tier, HCFC 57
SAFC 2 seasons in third tier, HCFC 29
SAFC 0 seasons in fourth tier, HCFC 10

SAFC 6 top flight league titles won , HCFC none
SAFC FA Cups won 2, HCFC none

No-one can argue.that decades of playing in top tier (inc 67 consecutive seasons from 1890/1 to 1957/8) generates a bigger support than an underachieving club with no honours and only 5 seasons in the top flight.

Relegation to the third tier is all too familiar territory for us, but for many SAFC fans it's a chance to visit new grounds as their team racks up the wins.

Plus of course there is **** all to do in Sunderland: you have to go to Newcastle for decent shopping, entertainment, ruby etc

Who are HCFC?

Think SAFC more or less clinched promotion that day, they must have brought somewhere between 10 and 15 000.

Then they came straight back down and we thrashed em 3-0 in front of 16 189 , our next home attendance was 10,106

I wonder how many thousands we'd have taken to Joker Park in 1976 after winning the FAC in 1973 and were about to clinch promo to Div 1.

At least as many as they brought here in 1976 I reckon

Remember, in a stat war, the first casualty is context.

Gate was 15,010 v SAFC that season

Reckon they brought about 5,000

Stokoe still in charge I think. They had a great team as this MOTD clip v MUFC shows.

You think Sunderland's gate would have been 15,000 up for our visit in the same circumstances? Dream on.

Why not?

If we took 10,000 to Bramall Lane for a midweek game in March 71, why couldn't we take 10-15,000 to SAFC on Saturday in mid April 76 with promo imminent?

Don't understand why you are so negative about our support

You could have said ‘about our city’ same thing.....

I am not negative, just a realist. The away game before Sheff Utd I went down to QPR. Only 20 or so.
City fans there. The away game after Sheff Utd I went to Luton. For some reason there was a football special on and about 500 there. Where were the other 10,000?

Skint after Sheffield?

Skint after Sheffield?

Skint before Sheffield as well.. Another of the myriad excuses given which don't apply to other clubs.
If negative me could get to all three and had to pay to get to Hull on top to get on the coaches why couldn't all these positive types?

Yep he liked to use the expression ‘fundamental changes may need to be made’, whilst based on the combined personalities of him and Grayson I would have thought that the most beneficial fundamental change would have been to have got rid of him. I binge watched the full series and loved it, I’m hoping they do another series st the end of this season.

they are doing i believe
