Would they get those crowds if they'd been in in the Third and Fourth Divisions for 13 years rather than a mere 6 months?

Simon Grayson is unhappy at how he has been portrayed in this, I was reading. Will have to give it a watch at some point. Am glad we didn't end up with Cattermole as it would have stunted Batty's progress this season, surely them plummeting down the leagues must have something to do with his input also

SAFC 86 seasons in top flight, HCFC 5
SAFC 30 seasons in second tier, HCFC 57
SAFC 2 seasons in third tier, HCFC 29
SAFC 0 seasons in fourth tier, HCFC 10

SAFC 6 top flight league titles won , HCFC none
SAFC FA Cups won 2, HCFC none

No-one can argue.that decades of playing in top tier (inc 67 consecutive seasons from 1890/1 to 1957/8) generates a bigger support than an underachieving club with no honours and only 5 seasons in the top flight.

Relegation to the third tier is all too familiar territory for us, but for many SAFC fans it's a chance to visit new grounds as their team racks up the wins.

Plus of course there is **** all to do in Sunderland: you have to go to Newcastle for decent shopping, entertainment, ruby etc

There is **** all to do in Newcastle, surely. That is why they get big crowds.
The excuses as to why other clubs get better support are indeed myriad. The suggestion 8,000 travelled to Blackpool on a New Year's Day to tick off a new ground is risible.

I wonder what Sunderland fans do when they leave after 20 minutes?

There is more do in Newcastle than Sunderland but there are also more people there.

How come they only brought about 1200 to City last season?

Was it cos they were doing ****?

How many did we take there? Of course there is so much to do on a Saturday afternoon in Hull.
How many did we take to Wednesday compared to the 8,000 we took a while back? Amazing bit of info, teams take more away when they are on a good run.

So not such 'amazing' support after all then.

GY and Lincoln both taking about 5,000 away today to CPFC and EFC.

Some crowded bandwagons on the roads at the moment .

Can't accuse us of that. Everyone sells out at Old Trafford. We could have had 9,000 tickets for a semi-final there but only 1,000 went. Obviously so much to do in Hull on a midweek night. Mind you, we took more to Villa and Newcastle than we were getting for home games at the time. Bandwagon jumping? All the many things normally going on in lively Hull cancelled that night?

I remember Sunderland coming down here for first time 70/71 season. Brought about 3,000 down, took over the pubs and caused mayhem. We, in our best season for 40 years, took 2 coaches up there. Obviously we didn't have as many wanting to tick off new grounds.

I went to roker park when there were only 2 coaches a bit later in 73? Next season we drew them in the cup and over 10 coaches were arranged but it got called off. Think again one or two went for the rearranged fixture.
Must have been the magic of the cup. Plus there was a lot of safety in numbers amongst City fans for a long time.

I remember in 1987 they brought 3 coaches (150 people) for a night game and they rattled around in the North stand.

    Good times. bad times.
