Happy birthday big man <cheers>

Absolute legend and a top bloke too, always happy to stop for a chat/picture if you see him around town.

Someone get the Newcastle brace up <ok>

One story I like to tell about a Matt goal was when I lived in Christchurch. Saints played Villa at The Dell on a Monday night and it was on Sky. I didn’t have a season ticket then (maybe around seasons 95/96/97), so I popped along to the Sandpiper pub in Mudeford which was a good place to watch games with a nice big screen. There weren’t too many in, but sat in front of me were a couple of Villa fans. All game, Le Tiss was strolling around, nearly breaking in to a trot (but not quite) whilst these two Villa fans slagged him off all game. They were calling him a waste of space, lazy and Captain Beaky. Anyway, Le Tiss equalised with an absolute screamer very late on in the game (a free kick I think - will check in mo). I couldn’t help myself as these two numpties had been making me boil all night (that and we were ****!) and as the free kick flew in the top corner, I jumped up ran in front of the Villa fans and screamed into their faces, “there you go, you can stick your Captain Beaky up your f*cking arse; get in there!”

Oops, I blame my inner Chilcs for that, but the lads put their drinks down, stood up and walked straight out to jeers from the rest of the pub.

My bad. :(

Love the 2nd for the way he beats Townsend twice and sticks him on his arse.

Lovely chip for the last one too, and that surge from the crowd...

I remember once walking down the centre with my brother and his wife.....when she turned round and said "can't believe you two call yourselfs fans....didn't you see him?" We had both walked straight past MLT without recognising him <laugh>......

Correction: it was the winner. Beat them 2-1 with a Le Tiss striker in the 90th minute.

One black mark against Matt.... he did start the Fergie era by helping to get Ron Atkinson sacked!

Okay, my Matt memory.

Moons ago he opened a rubbish restaurant/club with “comedian” Mike Osman, called Celebrations. It closed pretty quickly afterwards, but wasn’t far from Benali’s restaurant.

Guy who had a season ticket next to me at The Dell knew David Hughes quite well (talented but perennially injured midfielder) so we managed to blag tickets for the opening night. All the squad were there, along with various other luminaries, and a large percentage of the ‘76 cup winners. All good fun.

Anyhow, I had some good chats with Matt, and told him that my parents were taking me for dinner for my 21st (that’s how long ago this was) at Celebrations the next weekend.

So we rock up the next weekend, go to sit down, and there on the table is a copy of the ‘Unbelievable’ video, with a note from Matt saying “Hope you enjoyed the opening. Happy 21st, Matt Le Tissier”

Legend.

Happy Birthday Matt.......one of the most gifted players I had the pleasure to watch...............a real legend!!
