Arsenal's stance is ridiculous when this happens. They basically say that David Moyes is lying! And that PB and BH were lying about the spitting thing! Why do they think these managers would want to make up some rubbish about a talented and etnertaining player. They aren't trying to tarnish his or Arsenal's reputation, they say it because it's what happened! Why the hell would they make it up?!
But on both occasions, Arsenal just say, "No, he's lying!" like a little schoolboy. They'll probably turn the football world on Moyes like they did with us and PB too.

Oh, and since the pass was massively diverted from Koscielny's attempted clearance, it wasn't offside.
I've never understood this modern rule where players can still be offside after the ball takes 3 or 4 deflections off the defenders and goalie.

I think the offside rule as it stands today is insane. How can the goal in this clip (go to 1:13) be onside / not interfering with play?!?

I honestly think we could train Stewart and Simpson to play like this with Koren / Evans / Belaid threading the ball through. Surely if you scored enough goals like this they would change the rule.

Thats a joke. I thought if you were gaining an advatage by being in an offside position the you were offside. All this second phase stuff is bollocks. If any player is offside, your offside, no ifs or buts- it would certainly clear things up and avoid incidents like the above

It used to be, if someone passed it to you and you were offside when they passed it to you then it's offside and an indirect free kick. Under that rule, both the Saha goal and that above link are perfectly good goals.
Now, people start saying "Well the scorer was offside when the pass to the assister was played, and he gained an advantage so that's offside."
This is in fact the modern crap that complicates things. It should just be if you receive the ball directly from a team mate and are offside when it is played, that's a free kick.
People get confused with how stupidly modern it is and think that they've made the rule more attacking, when actually they've made it better for defenders.

I understand what you mean but then that leads to so many permuatations. for example if a ball is played through to somebody running onto it who is onside but then there is somebody standing in an offside position where the ball is heading but doesn't touch it is it offside? The offside person is interfering with play as the defenders will play him offside, but if he doesnt touch it is he offside?

No he's not, it can be simply cleaered up by the rule as it originally was. It wasn't written in such simple terms but it used to be as simple as:
If you receive the ball from a team mate and are in an offside position when it is played, you're offside.
In the situation you just hypothesised, the player in the offside position does not touch the ball, so he hasn't received the ball. It's that simple. There needn't be any debate about phases or whether an advantage is gained.
Saha was not offside because he did not receive the ball from a team mate. It came completely off Koscielny. That video is also not offside becausewhen player 1 passes to player 2, player 2 is onside, and when player 2 passes to player 3 it is backwards. Player 1 did not pass to player 3 so it doesn't matter where he was at that point!
They might not have touched the ball but are clearly interfering with play and gaining an advantage should they chose to pass to them. Im not 100% sure on what the law is, not sure many people are, thats just my opinion.

Given that she is a qualified official, it's a gimme that she would know the offside rule.

What you're saying there is the modern complication of it all. It's the modern thing that people start saying "He might not have received the ball, but he did put the keeper off." or "Did he gain an advantage there by being offside when the pass was played to someone else, and then he was positioned further up for the pass that came to him 15 minutes later?"
If you stick to the rule how I said it a couple of posts ago, there are no complications, and no daft excuses made up by people to avoid goals being scored. There is also much less chance the the linesman would get it wrong. I think the linesman's job is incredibly difficult (much harder than the referees) but they nearly always get the offside call right. If you start asking them to think about where the attackers where 6 months ago when someone else passed it to another someone else. Then it becomes physically impossible.
Their attitude is appaling, the notion that they would insist both Moyes and Brown were lying about 2 seperate incidents, both times saying "Show me the footage." and hiding behind the fact it's in the tunnel.
