I haven’t been to San Francisco for 30 years, was aiming for a NW USA trip this year but want 3 weeks to do it and neither me nor the wife can get a block away from work at the same time for that, may have to wait for retirement. So in a few weeks we have 4 days in NYC followed by 4 in Chicago to mark our 25th anniversary. My favoured approach for cities is just to wander, but any suggestions for NY places to eat in particular welcome, and any non obvious things to see. Chicago is like going home and my mate has already got us the Blackhawks tickets.
 
England well on top today even after allowing India to make more than they should’ve, love to see cookie make his last century, need push on though after lunch & get them in for an hour before close tomorrow unless we are bowled out before.
 
I've tried to watch as much of this fifth test as possible, but it has all of the feel of a dead rubber. I could've gone to see today's proceedings and was offered a ticket but glad that I declined. This was a good chance to see what our youngsters are made of and give them an opportunity rather than sticking with the old guard. It doesn't matter if we win 3-2 or 4-1. What stands out for me though is the quality of the umpiring, hardly any decisions over turned so well done to them. It would be great to see Cook bow out with a century even if I wouldn't have played him.

Hopefully we have at least confirmed that Jennings is a long way from being a Test opener, another terrible decision getting out yesterday.

Who do you rate as the ‘old guard’? Broad and Anderson?

How long have we had to wait for two top order English batsmen to put on a decent partnership?

Nines is right, it’s a bit of a dead rubber and the pressure is off, but a convincing win against the alleged best in the world can’t do any harm. Except to emphasise yet again that the away team in Test series are at a massive disadvantage, especially if they don’t even try to prepare.

Come on Cookie, get the ton.

C'mon Cookie, it will be amazing for him to get a ton in his last innings. Didn't he get a ton in his first test innings?

Alastair Cook rocks back to slice it away behind point for a simple single.
But the throw in gets away and zips over the outfield to the boundary for four overthrows.
Remarkable. A huge roar of relief and sheer joyous exultation from The Oval crowd.
Cook removes his helmet to salute and hugs Joe Root.

An elite club......

That is Alastair Cook's 33rd Test century in his 161st and final match, his 291st and final innings.
He joins Reggie Duff, Bill Ponsford, Greg Chappell and Mohammad Azharuddin as the men to hit a century on debut and in their final matches.

Weather looks ok. Cloudy but dry I think.
I'd have a bowl at them for 90 minutes tonight.

All we need now is for Jimmy to pick up the 3 wickets this evening to overtake Glenn McGrath's record when India do bat again and it will be a most wonderful day.........
