Sad to read this FLT. l do think he has a future in the EPL and would hope that it would be with us. When you hear the various pundits speaking in the games l watch on Bein, there is never a bad word about him and l only ever hear praise and respect for him. I do think he has suffered for lack of game time.

He’s a player that is easy to root for. I think maybe he has been hurt by lack of playing time, but tbh he hasn’t really earned it. Nor has he improved all that much. There have been glimpses here and there. He’s had several great 3-4 game stretches but then either returns to normal or gets sat back on the bench. I still think he can improve and reach his potential, but it’s not going to be with us.

This season was his time if the team was willing to take a chance on him. It doesn’t appear they do.

I will be surprised I’d he goes though, as he is well-liked by the supporters. And I mean, it’s not like he sucks. You would be taking a risk by selling him, given his potential, his popularity, and who we bring in may be a dud. It would be quite a ballsy move to make, and the decision-makers on this team are sadly lacking in that department.

I think we will be to afraid to play him, and too afraid to sell him, and he’ll remain in fringe presence.

I was probably just being a smartarse

Tbf I think our emotional attachment to JWP may cloud our judgement
I’m sure he’d like Sparky a whole lot more if he was starting
Sadly, JWP has to be (a) one of the best eleven to get selected and (b) one of the best in that chosen role in the team selected.
Fails on both counts too often....... so not a 1st choice to play often enough for him or MH it would seem.

The problem for JWP under any manager is knowing where to play him. He's massively talented and smart and future captain material but I couldnt tell you how he should be used for the best outside of setpiece delivery. I'm really disappointed to hear Hughes not getting on with him, I'll be gutted to lose another long standing club player and it will be another black mark against the club for me. Constant change and erosion leaving nothing to feel connected to.

I agree, I would be gutted to loose JWP and feel he should be a starter as he is the only player who can take a set piece in our squad.
He will no doubt out last Hughes who will probably loose his job at XMas, if he decides to stay and fight for his place

This was one of my biggest bugbears with Pellegrino among many others!, JWP did come into the team and we did improve (especially playing with Pierre) but after a couple of matches MP would drop him for someone like Davis for no reason other than change for change's sake. Puel started him more and he had a run that saw him get selected for England.

Exactly. I’ve said to other people that I think he was born 20 years too late. If he’d come through in the 90s when everyone played 4-4-2 he’d have been really good in that Parlour/Beckham role on the right of midfield.

As it is midfielders are more specialised now and sadly he doesn’t really offer enough going forward to play as a wide forward or attacking midfielder but equally isn’t good enough defensively to play as a DM. If we’re going to play 3/5 at the back then the only role I can see for him in the team is as a right wing back and I suspect he wouldn’t want that.

Yep he strikes me as the sort of player to fit into a team performing well but also to fit into a team not performing well, in other words to me he not really a game changer....that reads like gobbledygook but I know what I mean, it also infuriates me that (and I accept it may be true) he is the only player able to deliver a decent set-piece delivery, if the coaching staff can't coach all the players to deliver a decent corner or free kick there is something lacking

Sometimes it is time for a player to move on...and I'm thinking of what is best for James and not us. Perhaps he hasn't progressed and has his weaknesses, but he might fit in great in another team where he is used differently/more. He is a good player to have in our locker (and no one cares more than JWP), but he may do better elsewhere. Go James....run free for your own sake (forget about us, because we are over critical, miserable sods anyway).

The last time we had any kind of free scoring run was when Gabbiadini first arrived and Puel played Redmond, Tadic & JWP in the three behind.
Gabbiadini got injured and for various reasons we have never returned to that combination since.
Don’t think wing back suits him, but would have like to have seen him given more of a chance in pre season.

Im sure others will step up, but i’d wager at least three quarters of our goals last season would have featured either Tadic or JWP in them

As I mentioned yesterday if we sell JWP I don't think we really need to replace him (except the set piece ability which doesn't have to be someone who plays in the same position). With Armstrong/Davis/Hoj/Lemina/Romeu/Reed currently in the squad I don't think we need to go and sign another CM, should definitely be looking to use the funds to bring in a proper AM/winger or a striker. Preferably both but we have left that too late.

Probably sell JWP and bring in long term Hughes target Geoff Cameron

Chances that we sell JWP for less than he's actually worth - 50/50

Chances that we spend twice the proceeds on players who don't deliver then pack a sad and bugger off within 2 seasons - 80/20

I don't want to lose him and would rather trim Reed and Davis from the squad. However, sentiment aside, we ask every season if he's really ever going to kick on to the next level?

The problem for us is that we need to trim the squad somewhere. Gallagher,Reed,Davis,Targett and others have all had links to moves away. Fans have been for and against, For us to improve tough choices need to be made, the issue for me is that with our current board we would sell JWP and bring in a Mark Knoble or Charlie Adam!

I’d ideally keep JWP and see how he goes this season. It’s time he kicked on as we’ve been waiting for him to do it for a while. He’s got potential and needs to step up now. That said, if he is sold, I wouldn’t be too disappointed, he wouldn’t be a huge loss.

The reality is we’ve only really got Elyounoussi and Redmond as wingers. If Mo doesn’t settle quick enough or doesn’t work out, and if Redmond doesn’t kick on or carries on as he has, then we are right in the ****. That might be a case for arguing we should keep JWP as he’s another who can (kind of) play wide. Add to that we have to keep Austin fit for the season to have a chance of scoring and we don’t look in brilliant shape.

That is all based on ifs and buts, but the past two seasons suggest it’s likely we’ll struggle to score as we’ve still not addressed the winger/striker problem. Who knows if we bring in another attacker by tomorrow, but having started the window fairly well, the board appear to be having a poor window yet again.

Yeah I don't see how JWP would get game time with 3 under hughes. He seems to insist on just playing 3 attacking players and seems to rate Redmond higher than Prowse. I rate him as our third best attacking midfield player after Ely and Armstrong. So if we were playing my preferred 4 2 3 1 where we play a mix of a speedster, creative player and technical player he would be a starter.

But under hughes I don't see him picking up game time.

He might actually do well next to Armstrong. Armstrong and JWP both seem to love a one - two, whereas Redmond, tadic , boufal etc preferred to beat their man themselves. So I could see them playing each other in behind in a narrow front 3 like we were playing at the start of pre season. But can't see hughes trying that. Other than that I don't see him working under hughes formations.

For JWP, in this market?

£30m, not a penny less. That’s what we were (supposedly) willing to pay for Promes.

I'm glad you added the supposedly

I thought it was made up though <confused>. At this stage I reckon we will sell for about £15m, which is still very cheap for a 23 year old English player with probably close to 100 PL games

Made up that we'd sell him for £10m? Yes I believe it was.
