Do we? I thought we had spent the Virgil money now?

£75m + £10m for Tadic = £85m Take off Celtic's cut which was rumoured to be about £10m iirc so that leaves £75m total.

    Carillo £20m Armstrong £7m Elyounoussi £16m Gunn £13m Vestergaard £18m = £74m

Obviously very basic maths but by that we have basically broken even with ins and outs since VVD left. I agree we should be rolling in money, but the way it looks is that we are doing our usual trick of having a net spend of either profit or £0

Fair point, but we were apparently going to spend £30m on Promes in January, and then again this summer, which obviously isn’t happening, but none of the players brought in would have been instead of Promes, so we could at least spend some of that on an attacking player, especially as we let Tadić go.

I don’t quite know why people get hung up on the VVD money when we are paid collosul sums in the TV deal.

I think if we had signed Promes (I still am not 100% that we REALLY tried and knew it was very unlikely and was more an appease the fans type thing) then we wouldn't have signed Elyounoussi or Armstrong.

We all know just by looking at other clubs that we should have a lot of money knocking around, but for whatever reason we are very reluctant to spend it. People say "oh it isn't all transfer fees, you have to take into account wages/agent fees etc" but that isn't unique to Saints. Every team has to pay wages (a lot of them pay similar or more than us) and agent fees. Yet we are the only ones who consistently sell more than we buy. It will most likely only end up one way in the not too distant future I fear.

I sort of get it as it seems to be our model to spend what we sell and no more, so the fact that we have basically broken even in the last 2 windows so far would suggest we are still doing that. Where the TV money is going is anyones guess.

Would say it is more likely to be servicing the debt Gao got when he bought the club, but this isn't a new thing since he has owned the club so I'm sure other people behind the scenes see it as a good business plan.

He’s not happy. He doesn’t like Hughes and doesn’t think he’ll get much game time under him. He’s been think of asking to go for a litttle while.

I think the other thing here we seem to be overlooking is the club beating on about wages. You know, we have to pay the incoming signing lots of money each week.

Well, we ain’t still paying the wages of the player who we just sold are we...

He can’t take a set piece if he’s not on the pitch. And he won’t be in the pitch if Armstrong is playing. I don’t dislike JWP by any stretch, but it seems apparent that Hughes doesn’t like him that much. What did we buy Armstrong for if not to play attacking central midfield?

I personally do not think we should have to sell to buy. Or if we did, I would have rather spent the money on a striker or right wing than on Armstrong. Which would give JWP a spot on the team.

So we shouldn’t be in this position to start with, but here we are. We bought Armstrong, the board insists we have to sell to buy. We still desperately need an attacking player. If it takes selling JWP to accomplish this, I’d still rather see that than JWP rotting on the bench.

Sad to read this FLT. l do think he has a future in the EPL and would hope that it would be with us. When you hear the various pundits speaking in the games l watch on Bein, there is never a bad word about him and l only ever hear praise and respect for him. I do think he has suffered for lack of game time.

I was probably just being a smartarse

Tbf I think our emotional attachment to JWP may cloud our judgement
I’m sure he’d like Sparky a whole lot more if he was starting
