Preston North End 1-0 QPR: Steve McClaren hopes to bolster QPR after opening-day defeat - BBC Sport https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44989044

Steve McClaren says he hopes to bring in some experienced players on loan to bolster his QPR side after their opening-day defeat at Preston.

Alan Browne's second-half looping header at the back post was the difference between the sides as Rangers struggled for possession and shots.

The club face a transfer embargo in January and agreed a settlement worth almost £42mwith the EFL last month after breaking Financial Fair Play rules.

"It's difficult to purchase anybody, so the transfer window is really ineffective for us, but the loan market can be very important," former England manager McClaren told BBC Radio London.

"We're looking to strengthen the team and probably bring in a bit more experience because we've got talented youngsters.

"We've brought one player in and lost four or five from last season, so in terms of strength we are not where we want to be."

Former Derby boss McClaren - who has now won just one of his past 11 games as a manager of an English second-tier side - has until Thursday to bring in permanent signings and will be unable to add any more players until next summer after the loan deadline passes at the end of the month.

I’ve sat and read this thread in a lovely leafy piazza in Palma de Mallorca. It feels like it’s 50 degrees. I think I’m glad to be away from the football for a couple of weeks, hopefully things will pick up on the pitch before I attend my first game ( Bristol City. ) Doubt it though as we have some tough matches coming up. Budget Rangers will struggle to stay up this season, especially when the inevitable injuries start mounting up. Off to Valencia tomorrow so it’s not all bad.

Cheers Stan, trying to stay well hydrated but my body is taking on the appearance of a human twiglet. I have a bit of a sore head as well. I think that maybe down to the ice. Every drink I had last night had ice in it. Avoid.

A new skipper but the same old story - QPR talking points

The cagey affair was won through a goal by Alan Browne - subjecting QPR and Steve McClaren to a 1-0 defeat in his first game as manager.

    An all-too familiar tale
Anyone who watched QPR on a regular basis last season won't have been left surprised by the way the Saturday afternoon at Deepdale unfolded.

The Hoops had a torrid record away from home last term under Ian Holloway, and as much as fans will have hoped for a fresh start this time around, it looks to be very much the same.

QPR's lack of ideas and inability to carve out much in the way of clear-cut chances left the game very much in Preston's hands, with the home side showing the necessary nous not only to pinch a goal, but see out the game for a valuable three points.

Of course there's plenty of time for Steve McClaren to make his mark on the team, but anyone who was hoping for a quick fix to the club's issues on the road will be having to wait a while longer.

    The emergence of Captain Fantastic
It wasn't a day of many positives for QPR, but the introduction of aptly nicknamed 'BFG' has to be one of them.

As well as making his first appearance in English football, the Hoops only senior signing of the summer, Toni Leistner was awarded the captains armband - admittedly to the surprise of those fans who were let to see him in action.

Well, any doubts were quickly alleviated once the game got underway.

The 27-year-old is a refreshing throw-back to an 'old-school' defender - barking orders at those around him and putting his head in where it hurts.

It's exactly the kind of leadership that this QPR team need.

Of course he has his limitations - but Leistner will be delighted with his first appearance in a QPR shirt, and if he's able to show more of what he showed at Deepdale, it won't be long until he's a firm fans' favourite back in W12.

    A need to strengthen?
I've posed this as a question, but in reality there's no doubt about it.

With just one senior signing replacing five experienced departed stars, it's a case of simple maths over what the club need to do in the transfer window.

Steve McClaren admitted after the game that the club needs to add more players, and whether that is a permanent deal this week, or a loan signing before the end of the month, I think QPR certainly need at least two senior recruits.

The performance at Preston perfectly encapsulated what we already know about the squad - and however young and talented some of these players are, there's no substitute for experience when up against on a difficult Championship away-day.

Matches like the clash with Preston are all about grinding out points, and as such you need players who are happy to win by hook or by crook - and in my opinion, that means QPR are in desperate need of some players who have been battered and bruised on their various trips around the block.

Hopefully the club will be able to make progress in the coming weeks, one way or another.

The thing that bothers me and before I get shot down, I wanted Ollie out and believe that Schteev is a better coach.
    However
What bugs me Is reports from Saturday say that we are no different from last season? And after the loss Schteev says we need experience! <yikes> No 2222 Sherlock! Why has this not been addressed especially after losing Smithies/Chump and Co? Before someone says 'we have no money'? we got rid of a few so there should be a bit of cash to bring in someone.

Agreed 100% I was perhaps expecting a youthful revolution a chalk and cheese difference in approach
We narrowly lost 1-0 and nearly got a lucky point but I trust Bob's assessment as you can only see football live cameras only show the framed ball
SM made us look OK under Harold but anyone would and we had good players then

Faith has to be put into this lot its our jobs to do so

SM for me is not a winner I have to say but he could be a good coach to these young guns

Ellers you are a mass consumer ... spend spend spend

Maybe the answer for QPR is similar to Brexit we can't buy if we have no money and we may not be producing the quality of players to compete with the other clubs (markets). We have nothing to sell anymore and are up to our eyeballs in debt

We could have literally pinched a point, smash and grab but the performance would have still really concerned me.

At least Steve knows we need a few players but surely that was obvious to see to everyone, considering those who have left. These youngsters are decent. One or two may become good but I can't see any following the likes of Sterling in commanding such fees

I get the impression that we're waiting for the Prem window to shut before looking to pick up some experience on loan.
I agree that it's a little worrying that those at the game and who watched it are saying that we didn't look any different to last season and kept lumping the ball to Smith.
A decent, experienced forward on loan who can hold the ball up and link play would be most welcome.

He’s a canny player but Foxes would have to pay most of his wages.

    Nothing to sell......... absolute b****x
Upto our eyeballs in debt, more b****x
In Brexit terms as you seem to like that phrase..................... you are scaremongering!!!
Our oversized squad must be worth upwards of £25,000,000 in today’s market .......................
And if you actually cut through the media bollox and listened and read what the club have said you would know we are not actually in that much debt, we do have money, but thanks to Sparkless and Deadcrap overspending and the FFP consequences we aren’t allowed to spend any of it,
So in essence Mr Socks please look at your glass and imagine it half full rather than sitting there and seeing it half empty.
