Yes but you are putting these guys on a pedal stool suggesting the average fan wouldn't be able to see who fits into the team. I've just given some super obvious examples of where these people are wrong.

Pretty sure when the like of Liverpool went scatter gun and bought in lovren benteke downing etc everyone could see they were not the right fit.

No. I am saying that you get the whole package, mistakes and all. You can't have Levy minus mistakes. You can only have something worse

Think they would have been okay. They were bought on the cheap in mind of their potential. Think any blocking of deals from fans would be for big bucks on mediocre players

Agreed that levy has a great ratio. You are talking about buying and selling players as a business decision in general not being a 20k job or for your standard fan.

Doubtful mate, fanbases in general, not just Spurs, never really look at players with potential unless they already have a reputation (which Dier definitely didn’t have and Dele was only being whispered about).

Guys like Trippier as well would’ve been discarded. A player from Burnley who’d just been relegated? Fans would’ve laughed it off.

You got him on the super cheap. Fans might not have been ecstatic about his signing but I would say they certainly wouldn't have stopped it as that was for chump change

That’s possible but then there’s the other way of looking at it in that because he was a cheap buy and from a relegated side, fans would’ve wanted “proven quality” and therefore turned their noses up at him.

I think the fact you and I seeing two different views on how players could be judged shows how bad the idea of a fan input would be for clubs. You wouldn’t really get a unanimous or definitive response. Way too messy in my opinion.

That's the problem with fans: either they don't know what they want, or what they want is utterly unrealistic.

For example I've seen some utterly ludicrous suggestions for strikers we should bring in to support Kane over the last couple of years, with Ciro Immobile being the first that springs to mind, none of which seem to comprehend that a player who is first choice for their club and a full international isn't going to jump at the chance to play significantly less games the following season as that will drastically affect their chances at getting international game time.

That's why we're currently lumbered with the Catch 22 where we either have to sign a striker who is good but not good enough as an understudy (i.e. Janssen), one who isn't expecting to play regularly as he simply isn't good enough to play regularly for a team on our level (i.e. Llorente), or a player who can be deployed up front as needs be but is best served in another position (i.e. Son)

I think the main purpose of the fan committee would be to veto the obviously crazy money for crap player transfers

That’s the problem, it’s impossible to tell what a crap transfer is until after they’ve joined and played a significant number of games.

How about Sissoko? We were all saying how crap he was. Newcastle fans were dying of laughter.

It's that kind of transfer, i'm talking about. Where the whole world and his dog knows it's a crock of sh*t, except our chairman and management team.

Here's the thing: Soldado and Paulinho were warmly received when we announced their signings, and (unlike the rest of the list) expected to go straight into the team and deliver - only to end up going straight into the team and doing whatever the opposite of delivering is.

As for Janssen, I've always believed that the plan was for him to be slowly introduced into the team via a few late sub appearances and some run-outs in the Season Killer Cup before being up to speed in time for the crunch time of the season, but with Kane's injury he was thrown in at the deep end and was obviously not ready, and his confidence nosedived as a result - which is why he was always second guessing himself when he was played later in the season. It's hardly the first time that's happened, Kaboul's first stint at the club's an obvious comparison, and frankly it's a miracle Danny Rose turned it around after his shambolic performances under AVB and Sherwood.

As for Sissoko, has anyone quite worked out what the idea was? Either the idea was to have him as Dembele's long-term successor (only for that plan to go out the window) or there's something we've missed, because he doesn't have the quality to be a regular starter - yet having him as a depth option makes little sense based on his wages and his expectation of regular game time due to being a France international.

Sissoko was poor business but we haven’t made too many ones like that before, so you can’t determine what “that type of transfer” is when Sissoko was pretty much a one off.

Other big money signings like Soldado and Paulinho for instance were ones the whole fanbase were incredibly excited about before joining.

Postiga, Bent, are two that spring to mind and don't forget Rebrov who partnered Shevchenko at Dynamo Kiev in an amazing strikeforce. They did well in PL didn't they.

You have to have some luck when picking strikers and the strikers themselves have to have some luck too.

Why do you think Levy chooses the players we buy?
But anyway every other club has a worse record on transfers than us.

More than anything else, you have to ask whether they'd actually fit in with the other nine players around them

Rebrov played in a Dynamo Kyiv team that played a technical passing game, George Graham has us play Route One
Bent played in teams that played the ball over the top for strikers to run onto, Martin Jol had us play a short passing game with pacy wingers
Soldado played in teams where the midfielders created space for him to dart into, AVB had us playing a game where he needed to hold up the ball

In short, Bent could've been lethal for us under George Graham and Postiga could've been useful, while a Rebrov/Soldado partnership under Jol could have been on a par with the Berbatov/Keane partnership we had - but they were all deployed in the wrong system with the wrong tactics and were doomed to fail from the beginning

As for Postiga and Paulinho, the reason they were so successful in their domestic leagues is they were a rarity: target men are pretty rare in Portuguese football just as box-to-box midfielders are rare in Brazilian football - yet most they're anything but unusual in the Premier League, so managers know how to set up a team to nullify them
